anchor pulley "lock and release" question

I just purchased an anchor pulley for the bow anchor on my 14' fishin' boat. Wasn't looking for anything fancy, just a pulley to pull the bow anchor up and let down from the back of the boat. I saw this (picture below) at Cabela's that had the product description; "The Anchor Pulley is a lock and release pulley that sets or releases anchor without the need for leaving your seat." Well, I got it last week and when I looked at it I wondered how releasing the anchor is going to work. Maybe by keeping tension on the rope, the spring loaded locking mechanism behind the roller would allow the rope to pass through it until the anchor hit bottom and the tension on the rope would slacken and the lock would move forward and lock the rope.

I put it on the boat today and tried it. It sure lets you raise the anchor and lock it, but there is no way I can see that you can release it without going up to the unit and physically release the rope lock with your hand. I have read 11 reviews on the product page at Cabelas and everyone said it worked fine. I don't get it.

Has anyone used this? Or am I just nuts.

Won't it allow line Out if you hold a slight Upward tension on the lead line,..??..??....
The Upward tension should keep the pawl from locking against the housing.......

In the NW we use that type of anchor lock very often, only a stronger version because some of our anchors are 50+ lbs. They work very well, I'm not sure about that brand though.

mines a little different than yours, it has a hole in the lock that the rope runs thru, works great.

Re: anchor pulley "lock and release" question

Thanks for the replies. I still don't get it. I took the spring off the Pawl (didn't know it had a name) so it's just free-falling. I tried lowering the anchor from the up position and kept tension on the rope but as soon as the rope started feeding through the pawl it swung down and locked the rope.

I have taken the pawl off and now just tie the rope off to a cleat beside me in the back.

that's probably the best solution for the one you have.

You should be able to just hold some tension on the rope and let it feed through eye, it shouldn't make a difference if the spring is in place or not, most don't have a spring to begin with. If the rope is too large then it may cause enough drag to pull the arm down and make it lock, but other than that there just isn't much that can go wrong.

True. But the "rope" these guys are discussing is not a line. It's a rode.:D

If I wanted to correct all of the terminology in the "Restoration and building" area it would be a full time job for me, so I just live with it.
I've lived on the water for most of my life and haven't learned to speak "sailor" yet, so I've given up. LOL.

When does it change from a rope to a line or rode, when I buy it it says rope on the package and I didn't see it change shape, color or weight, so I thought it was still rope.
