Re: anchor questions

hey yourkidding

I use a folding north hill anchor and recomend it.
seen lots of people have thier anchors fail but sleep soundly at night!
in my case use 30' of chain and lots of rode some large boats use all chain
Sometimes in my area we stern tie to a tree or a hook set in the rock in small sheltered coves with limited turning room
You can get into trouble with a stern anchor and possibly swamp the boat the idea is to keep the bow into the wind
have also seen them wind around a propeller

Re: anchor questions

Really depends on the boat you're anchoring, the conditions and the bottom. I use a couple of different kinds on my pontoon, a fluke style and a navy style, both with chain and long rodes.

i use one of these http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/woeimages/anchor/large/14194.jpg navy anchors on our 14' off the bow well until my dad dropped it in the drink last year :/ and a 30# slug off the stern....
but you could just weld some spikes or such just to help dig in a little...got a anchor a while back someone made ....bleach bottle filled with cement with rerod extruding out the edges on the bottom.... worked really good actually except for leaving dings in the bottom of the tinny.....

now on my 18' glass sc i use this http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/woeimages/Anchor/large/3484.jpg off the bow and 2 33# slugs off each side the stern and anchor out in 100' of water stillfishing for lakers with no problems..

Re: anchor questions

IT IS RECOMENDED TO USE 4-6 TIMES THE WATERS DEPTH IN ANCHOR LINE WHEN ANCHORING....

seems like a lot but it is to let the chain keep the anchor line parrallel to the bottom so the anchor design can work....

some bottoms , probably wont allow an anchor to hold every boat above a certain current and or wind..

Re: anchor questions

60-100' depth, you lines are too short. You want a 7-1 scope in normal conditions and 10-1 in heavy weather/waves.

sereiously now..too short???..i am fully aware of the 7 to rule but...im not out in the seas with a 40' sailboat or anything. im in an 18' fiberglass fishing boat only to anchor a few hours at a time, not mooring overnight or days on end...where i anchor in 60' of water a 300' line is more than exceptable considering im not even 100-150 yards max off shore! the stern anchors are shorter for the reason they are dropped straight down only to hold from spinning in circles.... and my depths mentioned whether properly equiped or not were only givin as an example as too how* the anchors i use work for me...
on another note...if you look i actually have 700' of anchor line on board, therefore if it came down to any condition where i would need to properly* anchor in an emegency or any other reason i do have enough!
i have been occasionally approached and/or inspected by more than one sherriff patrol on the water and they where more than impressed with my equipment for the water i fish in.... that being said,
(this thread was started only to inquire what type anchors were used by fellow boaters)
i love this site... the information here is amazing!!!

This is good information and agree
I never anchor that deep its just too much work to haul up!

The point I was trying to make is with 30' of chain on the bottom your probably never going have much to worry about and doubt the boat could lift all that chain.

Re: anchor questions

The bottom, wind, and current conditions will all be determining factors. The fluke type anchor with 6' of chain should do well for you in a clay bottom. If the bottom is full of stumps then you may want to switch to a dead weight or mushroom anchor. Your angle iron with spikes in it may also be just fine in both. Likewise, a fast moving river will be different than a relatively calm inland lake.

They make different types for different situations.

You haven't told us what type of conditions are typical where you fish.

Re: anchor questions

I use the navy style anchor just like in cedarjunki's picture, I did not like the other (danforth) style because I know sooner or later it would end up puncturing one of my bow cusions, The smooth edges of the navy anchor are much more forgiving to wipe clean when you pull up a bunch of mud, it's just a little heavier but still my favorite anchor to handle and stow.

Re: anchor questions

This may be overkill. For clay I would use a Danforth type and for your size of boat a 8# or 13#. The flukes will dig into the clay bottom. You will want to start out with at least 6' to 10' chain hooked to the anchor and then the anchor line (rode) tied to the anchor. Because of the type of boat you have I will assume that you will not be overnight anchoring.

Here is how I set my anchor. For lunch / fishing I will go with a 3:1 ratio (three feet of line for every foot of depth) in calm water, up to 20 knot winds and 7:1 for anything stronger. 10:1 is not piratical and only gains you 15% more holding power. But you will most like use a 3:1 most of the time.

Mark your anchor line every 12' (10' + 2' for your freeboad which is the distance between the water and the top of the bow). Now when you are in 10' of water and want to anchor at 3:1 you let out your anchor line until you hit the third mark and tie it off. If you are in 20' of water and want a 3:1 then let out anchor line to the sixth mark. You see the process.

Once you have your anchor out and the rode tied off, back up your boat until you stop moving and then put a little stress on the rode to make sure you have set the anchor. Now you can drop another anchor of the stern if you want to keep you from spinning. Only do this if you need to, it is a temp thing when fishing anyway.

Hope this helps.

Re: anchor questions

themaniam--good ideas but I think you want to mark your first at 12' and the rest at 10'. otherwise after 4 units you are out 48' when you should be 42'.

Not that precision matters here.

I am wondering how heavy a stern anchor needs to be to keep a boat from spinning on the front anchor!!!!

I know that unless I let out a ton of line and set the back anchor then let out a ton of line to set the front anchor and mend them both to secure the boat...the boat will just drag the stern anchor where ever it wants to go!!!

I watched my buddiesboat go by bye bye once when i dropped the achor in 1 foot of water on a hard bottomed lagoon behind a 3-4 foot high sandbar...there was about 12 feet of line out!!!!...well the wind just blew that boat away...it was a danforth ( about 12 lbs!) which is a huge anchor for a 14 foot fiberglass flat bottom boat...with 4 foot of chain too!!!

it would catch once in a while and swing on the anchor line until it let go and drifted again...the bottom was just too hard..i think the anchor was catching once in a while on a protruding rock!!!

I had thought that the anchor might have got caught on the anchor chain/line and wasnt being dragged properly!!

wasnt the case

I have since wondered about my the right choice of anchor for a situation like that!!!!!!!!!!

Re: anchor questions

I anchor my boat for swimming, sunbathing, or just to chill listen to music, maybe do some fishing, it's a 20' bowrider. I drop the anchor and let out some rope, if I start dragging the anchor I let out some more rope until it grabs, if I'm fishing I'll also heave a mushroom anchor out the stearn to keep the boat from swinging back and forth and we'll tightline out the sides.
I've never had the need for chain on the little lakes I pleasure boat on.
I do take my 16'er on lake erie and anchoring is critical, I still have never had the need for chain, if 100' of rope won't keep me anchored then it's too windy and rough and I'm leaving anyhow.
I'm just making a point that methods and gear all depend on the what type of boating you do and what body of water your on.
