whats are some of better anchors out there & what weight do i need to hold a 28' Regal 2850 LSC? I can't get my anchor to hold , right now i have a #13 hooker w/ no chain. HELP!!
I am thinking of getting a Delta fast set& chain. Want to make sure before spending that much money on an anchor.

Re: anchors

A standard danforth anchor works great. I will tell you though, the chain makes all the difference in the world. I used to not use a chain and had constant problems, now I use a 9 or 14# danforth (can't remember the weight) with about a 6' chain for my 24' Splendor Platinum and it holds really well.

Re: anchors

What's your bottom like? What scope do you use (length of rode vs. depth), 7/1 is a kind of minimum. Why no chain? How do you set it? Power set in reverse? That setup should be able to hold your Regal, but I would add 20' of chain . . . Definitely helps despite the comments that are going to follow mine.

Edit: I want to clarify my "despite the comments that are going to follow mine" deal. There are many here that will tell you that you don't need chain. They will also say with "enough scope". Sometimes we'll hear 15/1 scope. Well if the depth is 50 ft. that's 750 ft. of rode . . . Chain will make any given rode behave like you are using a longer scope.

Re: anchors

couldn't agree with dvan and qc more, add some chain before you give up on that one.

Re: anchors

Thanks for the advise all. boating season is over here i took my boat out of the water yesterday for winterizing. We have a mud bottom here at this lake.I usually back into the anchor untill the line gets tight. Not sure how much line is out.My boat doesnt have an anchor lock on it , so i didnt want the chain rubbing on the top of the deck. But i found where you can buy them & it will be added to the boat this winter.

Re: anchors

how does a chain help?

A chain holds the anchor at the propper angle to allow the flukes to dig into the bottom. It also adds weight which helps act as a bit of a "shock absorber" in small rolls/wake.

Re: anchors

What they said ^^^^^^ + the more chain, the harder the boat has to tug before the shank pulls upwards. Same thing they are saying, but length matters.

Not sure how much line is out.

Well, you kinda need to know. One way is to mark your line every 10 feet with a marker or tape or something. Let's say you are in 10 ft. of water. You need at least 70 ft. of "rode" (chain + line) to have a 7/1 scope . . .

Re: anchors

I think Fortress is the best Anchor. You would need a 7 pound FX11.
If you use normal 7 to 1 scope then chain makes very little difference with the Frotress. Yes it does protect the Nylon form being cut by sharp rocks and will get your anchor down faster. If you use short scope then you must use some heavy chain or you anchor will drag with heavy loads.

They are not the cheapest anchors but are made of aluminum and the edges of the flutes are sharp so they dig in fast and the more you pull the deeper it goes. They sell them here at Iboats.

Go to frotressanchors.com And click on test by navy and others. Also powers boats has tested.

Re: anchors

Again, I think you need to match the anchor to the bottom. There are many types of anchors and each is tailored to the environment.

Believe in the chain.

Prefer the slip type Danforth style fluked anchor for the bottoms I fish (mud, sand, usually no rocks or moss/weeds) with the sliding ring where you can pull forward of the anchor and free it if it gets stuck on something. Has saved me having to cut the line and repurchase line and anchor several times.

Navy types are too heavy for what they hold, Mushrooms are for permanent mooring where the mushroom can bury it'self and for weedy bottoms they make one with a lot of fingers on it....forget what you call it.
