Ordered a new boat ... will have DPS drive.
All of my boating will be in salt water .... on another forum I read that standard Anodes should be changed for Salt Water versions.
Can anybody enlighten me as to difference, and where I can find appropriate part numbers.

Does the new engine come with ACP (active corrosion protection)?

Google "galvanic series" . . .

The difference in the anodes for salt vs. unsalted water being the more 'noble' (i.e. stronger) metal for salt. In fresh water, you want a weaker metal to more easily give up electrons. In salt water you want a stronger metal, as it will have more electrons to give.

No idea if it comes with ACP ....certainly not detailed. Is it standard or an extra.

Hi tafflad. Call keyparts down the south of England. They are really good and next day delivery. They are the go to guys for all things Volvo where we are.

If you trailer, you should be okay with the anodes that come with it and ACP wouldn’t help.

Yep ... boat always traillere, I have only just placed order for boat - I'll request that Zinc Anodes are fitted. Want to get it right, the DPS package has a lot of stainless steeel ... don't want the drive dissolving.

The way it comes, that's all you'll need.
But!! they should be changed about every 2 years anyway.
Make sure you flush after use in salt water, EVERYTIME!!

The photo's are from a motor that didn't ever get flushed.
The cooling passages were worse:(

Engine flushed after every use with X-Salt... certainly think that is good practise.
Previously I have only changed Anodes when they have decreased in size - by visual inspection,..changing every 2 years would Seem a waste after 5 years still 90% of original size.
So no need to request Zinc ones ?

Zinc will develop a coating when out of salt water, so they won’t work when do put it in the water unless you clean them before launch.

OK ....never been told that before, maybe they have not fitted zinc anodes to any of previous drives. I never moor the boat anyway. Perhaps I'll stick to standard Anodes then. Thnx

OK .,..had confirmatiuon boat does not have ACP
It will be provided with stock Anodes ..... but unable to clarify if Zinc or magnesium.

I have been told if I want salt water anodes fitted then they will change them at dealers .........bota is 100% used in salt water, but trailered (never moored up) ... so the thread above seem to be saying don't have zinc Anodes. Yet Magnesium arenot suited for Salt water. It will be a new boat so whjatever I get fitted will need to be a Volco part.

I don’t know about your area, but sterndrives here in the US have come from the factory with aluminum anodes for a long time.

Thnx for link to Boat Zincs.com. I reached out and they were very helpful ....given my requirements of a trailerred Boat & saltwater use .... this way their advice.
You can use either zinc or aluminum anodes. However, give preference to aluminum anodes as they offer slightly better protection to Volvo drives than zinc, even in salt water.

Ignore the junk advice of zinc being "no good if boat is trailered as zinc oxides and stops working." Nonsense. “

I would question the wisdom of this advice. The problem with zinc in a freshwater environment (when the boat is on a trailer the rain and humidity are freshwater) is passivation. Maybe if the boat is stored close enough to salt air it wouldn’t matter?
