Re: Another project K2500

Just about Done. :) I am picking up a new hitch (junkyard) this week and going to replace the old one that is rusted through. Before I re-installed the bedliner I painted the new steel and inside of the bed. I added the stake pocket hold downs to keep the liner even tighter to the bed. I am pretty satisfied on how it came out.

Re: Another project K2500

Had to resurrect this thread ......... The salt has been taking it's toll and it's time for a freshen up.

Last year I welded metal in front of and behind the rear wheels....... had to replace the rear bumper and a few other odd and ends.

Well the time has come........ I have a set of new fender's to yet install, I welded in new steel for one rocker today.....the other rocker is also on the list along with door bottoms. I already purchased the BC CC paint and hopefully this will hold me for a few more years.

Re: Another project K2500

Gentlemen, I am gaining a whole bunch of respect for anyone who replaces fender's on a '95 Chev truck! What a royal PITA.:mad:

With the exception of a few (4) bolts ALL of the other's had to be cut off (11). The salt damage goes MUCH deeper then I had anticipated. :(

The door bottoms are rotted, the rocker's are rotted, ALL the wheel wells are rotted (new fender's fro the front) and actually it is due to the plastic factory fender flares (which hold everything)............ it seems as if every inch I go I find two more inches of rust.

Geeezzzzze you pull the fender only to find the fender liner rotted too. I am gaining a serious envy for everyone in the South! ;)

All I want to do is get this truck to last me through the winter season....... Our first frost of the season comes annually around the first week in September.

You'd be jealous of the 100% rust free body panels on my '90 K1500 :D My frame looks a little ugly though which was concerning until I though about yours. If yours hasn't cracked in half yet than mine must be fine :p

Re: Another project K2500

Well mine has a slightly thicker frame since it is a 2500...... yup rust everywhere :( Slowly I am getting there. Our first frost is due here in 3 weeks.

Oh yeah...... I hate people who brag about being that old and rust free:p

My on-going project update

I am tired of welding and would be much closer to completion if the weather was better.

With every part I remove I find more rust. Had to rebuild the fender liner's and the rear wheel arches........ the list goes on...... my simple project has escalated but, it is keeping me out of trouble.

Re: Another project K2500

I really like the work you've done on the truck. Nice to customize it for your needs.:)

Love the rear lights, are they their own switch or wired on the reverse circuit?

I know what salt does to vehicles, to put it mildly...Michigan roads also receive an excessive amount.

I worry that the Great Lakes will become oceans sometimes:rolleyes:

They do use sugars beets now on a limited basis rather than salt, much less corrosive.

I think they are spraying a magnesium(sp) mix compound around here lately when the weather cooperates:rolleyes:.

(salt, remember the "FLASH TEMPRATURE" or its a waste.)

This new stuff  You can't get your windows clean for anything, but it works!:)

Re: Another project K2500

Actually since 2008 I ended up changing the bumper out. The old one that I rescued was due to rust and it finally succumbed and died. The newer bumper is a standard chebby one and I did install the same lights which are connected to the reverse lights.

Yup magnesium chloride (in liquid form is sprayed onto the salt and sand in the trucks) is being used on the roads in smaller proportions which is "supposed to be cheaper" and less harmful to metals than potassium chloride. They also use a product called MGO which looks like oil to pre-treat the roads just when a storm is starting. Between all of those chemicals and salt which is still used too......the older vehicles do not have a chance.

and more....

To remove the front fender's they had to be cut open to grind off the bolts

Passenger side mostly done with welding except the lower portion of the rear wheel well....... door lower, lower skin and rocker done and upper wheel arch done but nothing sanded right....yet

Both doors were rotted inside and out.

Driver's side I am waiting for the inner door repair panel then I will also do the lower skin and finish the rocker...... rear upper wheel well done.

The panels in front and behind the rear wheels were welding in late last year.

Both front fenders are new.

Re: Another project K2500

Bob_VT,
Your truck is turning out nice. Did you paint your truck yourself or take it to someone else to paint it for you? I ask because I have a 1995 Honda Civic DX that is in dire need of a paint job and I keep teetering back and fourth if I should buy a paint kit and paint it myself or get Maaco to paint it. I will probably get here painted in the Spring of 2012. Again, your truck looks good.
