Yes I painted it myself and it was my first venture into using base coat/clear coat BC/CC.

It has a layer of epoxy primer, a layer of epoxy sealer/primer, base coat (metallic green what a huge PITA to shoot the metallic) which did not want to cover, and 2 coats of production clear. Now the wheels and the grill are also BC/CC but the black paint worked great as a base.

Honestly if I has to do it again I would have gone with a single stage paint.

After this experience between all the welding and body work I have a true new found respect for people who do custom paint jobs.

Yes, LOL I considered "ghosting" in some flames but I really just wanted to get it done.

I spent today wet sanding, polishing and waxing.

Way too much work........ but it was cheaper then buying another plow truck.

Great job, Bob_VT. Yeah, I might paint my Honda Civic DX myself, since seeing your paint job pictures of your truck, and if I mess up it wouldn't bother me to terribly bad because it is my daily driver going back and fourth to work. So I am leaning more toward myself painting my own truck. Another question to you is how hard was it to mix the paint that is really what is bothering me the most with me doing my own paint job. Is there good mixing instructions that come with the paint. What I am going to do is paint my car back to the original Milano Red but was worrying that if I didn't mix the paint correctly that it would run or look like crap. I do paint at work but the paint is already mixed up from the company that sells the paint to my company so all I have to do is stir it really well before I shoot it out of the paint spray gun. I used a Devilbliss HVLP gun.......

The paint I used was considered bottom end PPG OMNI https://buyat.ppg.com/refinishProdu...BrandID=f7b90464-5ca2-4bef-95c9-eb8aefd601f1# and the base coat (PPG OMNI MBC) was mixed exactly 1:1 with reducer (I used a fast reducer since it was so cold outside and in the garage) so 1 to 1 was easy.

Epoxy primer MP170 was mixed 2 parts primer to 1 part activator
Sealer primer was mixed 5 parts to 1 with activator
MBC base 1:1
Production clear was mixed 4 to 1 activator.

The activators came in their own cans and I used the plastic graduated cups.

Everything was strained prior to going into the paint cup.

Mixing was very very easy.

Application is picky since the ^ pattern needed to be exactly square and the proper distance from the body which is tricky....... we tended (both my Son and I)to tilt the gun at times.

I used a low end but decent hvlp gun and low end metallic paint. I really stacked the cards against myself LOL.....


I have done a few other full size trucks and always used a single stage which was easier. For a Daily Driver.....single stage would be fine and cheaper. Looking back hindsight is SO clear!!

I have exactly one run in the entire paint job. Runs are easy to prevent....... the secret is in the very first coat which is applied lightly.....it becomes the tack coat and you build from there.
