The talk about lead free and 50/50 solder (heating vs. potable water) makes me grin. I know the reasons for using both are based on lead content and how it will impact lead levels in water supplys. Here in Chicago, most of the older homes and apartment buildings have solid lead supply lines coming into the building from the street. Building inspectors will test for lead free on all installations but ignore the supply lines from the street, which in my case, is over 50 feet. I'm sure that there's a big difference on hot water lines, leaching lead from the joints, as opposed to cold water, but it still make me chuckle just a bit.
