This might be a stupid question, but why dont you use PVC pipe? Not enough freeze protection?

Ken

Pvc IMO expands and contracts to much, This new PEX stuff, I didnt check out but really didnt want to purchase a 100$ tool for only 1 job....Not something I wouls use every weekend or even every month.Really dont have to worry about freeze protection as its all inside the house....
The copper is going good so far.good learning experience for sure.

Had pvc at the lake and changed over to copper since I got sick of spliting elbows on the hot line but maybe the news stuff is better don't know .I like the copper up there had a low spot when I drainned the system two winters ago and the pipe split due to water still in expanding when frozen it was a ten minute fix with a compression fitting and now I take the compression fitting apart when drainning for the winter So I love copper the glueing sucks it's enough doing it on vents and drains

They use CPVC for hot water lines now. Supposed to be better.

Ken

PEX eliminates all the problems of cpcv...it is flexible and eliminates the need for elbows...it also more resistant to freezing...great stuff!!

An interesting discussion on why it is harder to solder with lead free solder...

http://www.joneakes.com/us/hs/cgi-bin/getdetailsushs.cgi?id=1840

Interesting graph from the show:
The talk about lead free and 50/50 solder (heating vs. potable water) makes me grin. I know the reasons for using both are based on lead content and how it will impact lead levels in water supplys. Here in Chicago, most of the older homes and apartment buildings have solid lead supply lines coming into the building from the street. Building inspectors will test for lead free on all installations but ignore the supply lines from the street, which in my case, is over 50 feet. I'm sure that there's a big difference on hot water lines, leaching lead from the joints, as opposed to cold water, but it still make me chuckle just a bit.

That lead scare is mostly hype and is fuel for lawyers. Copper poisoning from corrosive water is more of a health risk than the minute amount of lead that may or may not leach out of a few solder joints.
