Also, don't forget the disposal of the old shingles. WIll probably need to rent a dumpster to take care of the mess. Most garbage services will not get rid of your old roof unless you have made special arrangements.

in the same boat Homerr, cept my roof is more like
what scoop describes. not that it's too steep, but
it has 3 layers of shingles including the origional
100+ yr cedar shakes.your roof sounds pretty easy
and not real big... mine is 36 squares
almost certainly will go with a metal roof.
it costs more for materials, but that way I won't
have to worry about a complete tear-off and re-decking.
good luck and be careful!
M.Y.

Re: Any roofers in the house?

Why do you need a new roof? Shingles cracking, or are they leaking? I know you already have thought of this, but if leaking, could any of the plywood be rotten? First, be careful. Secondly, remember that it is tounge and groove, so will be a little harder to replace. If you just replace the piece that is bad with regular plywood you will have a place that will heave up.

Metal roof - don't have to tear off the old, just nail down your perlins (sp?) and go. Make sure you have air circulation under the tin, but much easier. Of course, if you are only replacing half a roof you probably want to stick with the material of the other side. ;)

Just some additional thoughts.

Mellowyellow, You might want to rethink putting metal over three layers of roof  One thing that most folks don't realize is the weight factor. That roof will have three times the weight it is designed for. You say it aint steep. If'n you get a alot of snow all at once and the snow don't run off,, your roof might end up in the living room with ya.

i hear ya FH, but metal is only roofing bldg.
code will allow to go over. much lighter than
ashphalt and snow slides right off of it.
30yr warranty like good shingles.
$ saved:
tear off labor
removal/disposal cost
over 100 sheets of plywood
just hope don't sound like a gattlin gun when it
rains!

Metal roofing sounds like a great idea to me. I don't know why it didn't catch on decades ago. There is place about an hour away from here that manufactures metal roofing in serval different styles and colors, they sell direct or install it for you. If you buy the material direct it is price competitve with shingles, just a little more expensive. I almost wish I needed a new roof because my house would look great with a forest green metal roof above the red stained cedar exterior.
Have fun with your project and remember, safety first :)

What is the going price on the metal up there? I can get painted 30 year .026 3foot wide for $1.18 per running foot and about 15 colors
About $40.00 per sq. ( if I did the math right)
plus the ridge, screws,and flashing

It's been a while since I saw the commercial on tv but I think it was a lot cheaper than that because it was manufacturer direct.

Next question:

This house doesn't have any vents on the roof. I put an exhaust fan in the attic a few years back.

Should I put any vents in? If so, how many?

My house runs East/West. WHich side of the house would be best for the vents?

Thanks,

H.

My friend who is a general contracer is hooked on ridge vents. They do work well, but can have problems with leaking around the joints if not properly sealed. I used Liquid Nails to seal the joints and a bead along the bottom where you screw it to the roof.

Re: Any roofers in the house?

I sell a line of metal shingles for use in residental and light commercial construction. That being said-you should take a good look at metal shingles. If you do an internet search you can find alot of information about a number of manufacturers including the company I represent-Metalworks. I can not speak for other manufacturers but our products come with a complete line of accessories-starter strip, edge metal, gable rake edge, etc. The roof is very easy to install. And unlike asphalt shingles metal shingles will last the life time of the building (house). There are a wide variety of colors and styles to choose from, even a metal shingle that looks like slate-but lighter, less expensive and easier to install than slate-and you can not tell that it is not slate. Do yourself a favor and do a little research on the web-you will be suprised by what you find.

What is this stuff?

Upon tearing the old stuff off....I found what looks like clear tape in between each shingle where they overlap each other.
Kinda like taping them together or something.

Is this just old-school or?

My roofing book doesn't mention any tape.

H.

Re: Any roofers in the house?

Homer, the clear tape was put over the tar strips in the middle of the shingle, which makes the shingles stick together after being in the sun, and keeps them from blowing off. The clear tape is just to keep them from sticking together in the bundle, and is supposed to rot out and deteriorate in time. This gives you a one piece roof, when they all stick together, and is why I told flathead in a previous post, that you could use one nail, and after a little hot weather and sun, they would not fall off. It is best if you tear off that transparent strip as you put then on, but usually it is not done, for expediency, and it will rot out in time. :D :D :D :D

Deteriorate over time? LOL!

It must take a long time, cause this roof has been up there about 30 years I'd guess.

H.

I guess it is best to tear them off when you apply new shingles hey?? :D :D

No, it was to keep the adhesive from sticking the shingles together in the bundle before application. :D :D

Re: Any roofers in the house?

lakeman is right, I spent quite a bit of time on job sites as both general contractor and subbed out as a painting contractor (dad was a good worker, but not too good at bossing, I like working, but love bossing way better, LOL)(however, I do find being a boss means working twice as hard if you have a conscience!)

Roofers use as few nails as possible, and WILL sneak a one shooter in there if possible, dont forget, low bid usually wins the game, and who goes on the roof to check it out? "Shoemakers" of all sorts, regardless of experience, consider themselves roofineg experts, mostly due to the relative technical ease of the project - a ladder and roof jack are all you really need, well, that and a hammer, utility knife and a wonder bar to take the old roof off ... (hehehe .. and chalk line, tin snips, and oh yeah, youll prolly find out your brick chimney needs repointing, but that is a whole nother thread) this aint rocket science folks, if its more than two roofs, usually the township will REQUIRE that your tear off the old roof, not too tough to do, but it opens a whole new can of worms ... cuz once you tear that roof off, you have to either haul yer azz and get that new roof ON, or get some tarps and be aware that summertime brings t storms, rain with WIND (and lighting bolts, holy tallest object batman!)

my dad would put a dab of roofing seal (read: TAR) on each nail, I would tell him its completely unneccessary, but he loved redundancy

homerr, if you are in good shape and reasonably sharp, have common sense and some handyman skills, its really nothing to it

measure TWICE

cut ONCE

:D :D :D :D

Re: Any roofers in the house?

That "clear Tape" can stay on the shingle. It lines up with the tar strips on the shingles to keep them from sticking together from the heat. When installed, the clear tape no longer lines up with the tar strips so when the roof heats it sticks together as one piece. It will not affect the roof in the least.

I have never installed ridge vents, but I had them installed on my house. I can see it was a pain for them to cut the vent channel in the decking and not cut through the rafters, but it sure does a better job than the old roof vents. The old vents were clogged with paper wasp nests. The good thing about ridge vents is they work with wind from almost any way, they also create a better draft with your soffit vents (Hot out the top, cool in the bottom, and I think they look better than the cans or other types.

The clear strips are supposed to not end up on the tar strips, but they often do. In the field, working conditions are seldom/never like the manufactured conditions in the lab, and things just do not go as planned/designed. My first job out of high school, I was a gopher/worker in a production lab, and it is impossible to test/duplicate conditions in the real world. :D :D :D :D
