Lets get this straight.I am not hispanic bashing.Period.I am ILLEGAL bashing.Again, anyone coming to this country without following the law should be promptly returned to where they came from.Period.I dont care if you are,_______(insert nationallity) dont come here ILLEGALLY. That c&p had hispanics as the subject, simply because they pose the biggest problem, because of sheer numbers, and the close proximity to the USA.It would hold true for most of the countries in the world.

O.J., Yup, I agree.....I don't see the need to import more fruit pickers, packing plant workers, etc....I can drive down past Home Depot or the Millionaire Club & be swarmed by hundreds of illegals.....Sorry, I can't buy the cheap labor arguement or the nobody else wants to do it rationalization, if you are unskilled, you should be denied entry.....JK

I also don't like the C&P much, but will say that there is a difference between legal and illegal immigration. Here in CA we definitely have an issue with illegal immigration. I always think about the many immigrants (all races, creeds, colors etc.) that followed the rules. Are they stupid? No, they are what this country was built on. Something isn't right if their toils are not differentiated from simply sneaking in.

Also, I do not believe the oft stated menial jobs thing. IMHO the economy would adjust in a nano-second. It will not implode . . . What would happen is that wages for those jobs would immediately increase, that is if there are no takers at the lower wages which I also don't believe. There would be associated inflation as prices for everything related would have to increase (including the gardener, the housekeeper etc if they are currently here illegally). I am pretty sure that is worth it. Should stop all this ridiculous talk about a living wage, assist with the associated local government costs, hospital costs, AND raise tax revenues . . . which in turn should help lower inflation. Help me understand the errors of those suggestions and comments.

JK, could the cheap labor arguement or the nobody else wants to do it rationalization be due to the fact that there are so many illegals here that will do it? I would venture to say that if the people that hire illegals didnt have illegals to hire, they would be forced to raise the wages that they pay in order to find employees.

EDIT: QC you posted before me but you made some of the same points that I made, but yours was better written and explained, however. ;)

Your point is one I dont want to hear comming from you.. Sounds racist to me, one of the terms you've thrown around alot at folks here on this forum. I gave you an out and you stand by what you said (whites). the topic was about illegals. I might have agreed with your point, but due to your racist overtone your all alone on it. ;)

CPJ, one can probably do all of the afore stated in time, if... one is prepared to work for less than the going payscales in Mexico, whilst cutting their grass, repairing and building their houses, their roads, pick up their trash, grow their fruits and vegetables and so forth :(

edit: I forgot to add cooking most of the restaurant meals and washing the dishes.

That statement could either be tounge in cheek, or, it could be simpathetic.Which would it be?

No, cpj. I am not in favor of illegal immigration. It is pretty far fetched to suggest it.

I am in favor of treating, and viewing individuals as individuals, not by mass labeling and not by negative stereotyping.

I know that my Latino friends who do the menial work on ranches around here are legal, and some are second and third generation US citizens. Some have fought for our country (and theirs) and some have sons and daughters fighting for us as I write.

Some locals still refer to them derisively as "wetbacks".

My favorite expletives are inadequate to express my outrage when that happens.

BTW, I agree with everything JB has said in the preceding post, and I react semi-violently when I hear racist comments. I just wanted to clarify considering my comments above.

Dont let your interaction with a few individuals define your judgement of the entire latino community. Around here, the Mexican and Asian workers are some of the hardest workers around. They never complain, they do their job, and they seem to have pride in the quality of their work. Unfortunately, I cant say the same for the rest of the population.

I had 10 guys on a Mexican Framing crew working on my house when I built it. At 5:00pm, the job wasn't done but not one whined about wanting to go home. They took a break, called a few friends, then 6 more guys showed up and helped finish the job. They didn't get paid to help, they just did it because they wanted to see the job done. When they finished, they spent an hour relaxing and joking around in the front yard. The one who spoke English even asked if they could have beer now that they were done,....I bought the first six pack.

How many "white american" crews would have done the same???? 5:00pm...I'm out of here...it can wait...

Nav

Not to try and continue an arguement but sincerely, can you disagree with cultural norms without being a racist. Even ones that can be ascribed to a specific group?

Yes. I have spent a lot of time pondering political correctness and racism. I feel it is OK to say "I hate doing business with Mexicans" and I have. When I say that I mean Mexican businesses and their employees. However, I would never say "Mexicans are lazy" that is derogatory and untrue. BTW, nobody would say boo if I said "I hate doing business with Englishmen" . . . EDIT: BTW that is probably sexist . . . I should have said simply "the English". Pretty ironic :D

Or how about "Asians make better students". You could argue that a positive stereotype is just as racist. Very delicate balance these days. Maybe a better way to say that would be "it appears that Asian-American families put a higher priority on education than some other cultures". Pretty clumsy.

Here's one that I have noticed. Some Asian cultures chew their food with their mouth open. I hate that. I've seen that here and in China. There's a possible cultural norm that I think could be pointed out without you (or me) being a racist. I might even be wrong and just had a couple of unfortunate experiences, but that does not make me a racist. Very tough discussion.

Racist is too easily thrown around considering the stigma applied for so much as being accused of being one. But even the government categorizes people by race. Racist? Is crying racist just an excuse for not owning up to social and community ills? Is it an excuse for continuation of bad behavior?

Random thoughts brought about by this thread.

That is why I lost it with mattttt back a few weeks ago. Casually labeling someone a racist is wrong in my book.

I believe like many things, anti-racism is a good thing that has gone too far. I believe that the Democratic party is extremely racist, but they don't know it and don't understand it . . . Frankly, if they understood it they would stop.

Liberals promote lowering standards for different groups. Now that is offensive.
