Recently, I used AI for two questions regarding things on my boat (stern live well/aerator & emptying the motor well). I couldn't get satisfaction even from the generic owner's manual. So I asked 2 AI's detailed questions. I was blown away with the degree of detail in the answer. One program even offered to create a document to use that looked very much like a shop manual. Fantastic. I used Anthropic's CLAUDE and Google Gemini. I'm suggesting AI as an excellent starting place. With the AI information, I feel more confident diving in to solving the issue.

Have used both and have a slight feel better toward Claude but it want's to start charging. Gemini seems to be just fine but also noted that it misses things, and I've trained it some for my questions

be cautious. most AI chatbots pull data from social media vs authentic sources. That includes places like youtube, facebook, etc.

when I asked very specific questions on material compatibility (things that one in the marine industry have known forever). I get incorrect answers.

AI can be a good starting point, but can give you wrong answers, so verify the answers. If there are gaps in the information that it finds, AI will hallucinate (make up data based on probability… lie) to fill in the gaps. Not all AI answers are accurate …

I tried using AI to get part numbers for the fuel filters in my 1990 master craft tried 3 times got 3 different WIX part numbers.

Using AI for mechanical issues is one thing, but when people start using it for critical life or death decisions and information....it gets real scary !!

Ever since I have found out that some comments of mine, not having to do with boats, are repeated word for word by AI. I have started writing in wrong suggestions. I do not like billionaire thieves.

Ha ! I just been doing (almost ) exactly that ....looking for trans filters for my Rav4 ....got 3 different answers ( generic pictures ) and when I asked the difference between them it said they were all trans filters but for different trans's .....

If I'm doing something important, I'll direct it to use scholarly sources only and that way it avoids Reddit, TikTok and other social media, but instead starts using Mayo Clinic, NIH, Cleveland Clinic and other such high falutin' places to get better data.

I was working on my boat a few months back, installing a new tilt/trim sender to match my new gauge and I couldn't get the gauge position to match the engine. The Gemini AI turned OG on me and started giving me instructions on how to use my multi-meter to ohm out the positions in order to get it into range. I made progress and the measurements weren't quite right, so the AI said it might be a European part. I then double checked and confirmed it was US. So the AI said "let's try one more thing" and instructed me to hold the sender in my left hand and turn the "tab" back and forth very rapidly as fast as I could for at least 100 times. I did that and the thing worked! The AI explained that if those senders sit around for a long time (like in my garage... it even joked with me about that!) that a thin film of corrosion could appear on the pot internally and the machinations that I went through wiped it clean! That is some real OG stuff right there!

I have run into this too. I googled 2 different things this morning. AI quoted posts from redit and quora. I received an answer from facebook the other day.

I always follow the links to see where the info comes from but sometimes that doesn’t help either. I was looking up something for an old jeep a while back. The link took me to a trusted vendor’s website but I could not find the information the link was supposed to take me to.
