Hi Everyone.

First time poster :)

I just got my boat out of storage and I'm wondering if I'm ready to start it up? It has an 85HP force that looks like new inside and out. It ran great 7 years ago.
I changed the gear oil and mixed a gallon of fresh gas. I have the garden hose hooked up. Should I push start?

Can't hurt:) It will either start or it won't. How did you store it? The fuel pump diaphram may be ruined, does it have a fuel filter? If it ran well 7 years ago, it will run well now, it just might need some bits-oh-waterpump, I'd replace the waterpump for sure.

cheers

I just turned the key and it really tried to start but the battery died before it could. Charging the spare battery now and will try again tomorrow :)

When you go to prime the gas tomorrow check to see if the fuel disconnect is leaking gas.

Its alive!!!!! it started today, then it started honking from the dash area, not the horn.... no water came out of the two holes in the back of the outboard. Water pump problems?

Sounds like a bad impeller.

After sitting for 7 years it's a must to clean the carbs, change the fuel pump diaphram and water impeller. You should also give your electrical connections a quick look for corrosion. Run a small tank of 25:1 and seafoam to clear out any gum in the engine or reeds. Good luck!!

Re: awakening from 7 year hibernation

thank you guys. I caused a big problem!!! I took out the water pump impeller and everything inside looked like new. I went to put it back together and one of the bolts broke!! Can it work with three bolts? or I'm I in big trouble?

Also, should it be spitting water out of the two exhaust holes when connected to the garden hose?

I would get a reverse drill bit and spin the broken bolt out and replace it.

Yes you should have a pee stream coming from the telltail....did you have it just at idle? My old Chrysler needed to be at about 1500 rpm before water spit out and I had to modify the muffs for a better fit.

I gave it some gas and a small amount of water sprayed out....I remember it shooting water out allot more last time I started it years ago

Re: awakening from 7 year hibernation

The two holes are not for regular running or a tell tale.
The motor might have bugs(wasps nests)built up.I bought a used 85 and after setting for 3-4 years the wasps had a hotel working in the small holes. I started it and it took about 10-15 min for the dirt/mud/nests to finaly stop comming out.Black water and gunk!
The two holes are for pressure relief.
The motor when in the water will push way more water than it can use.
It has a pressure relief system(the two holes connect to a spring/plug)under the block.
When it's past an idle the spring/plug opens allowing excess water out the two holes.
I believe mine are stuck open, they pump water at an idle.
Salt water the exhaust housing might be clogged???
Profile, location? You might be close to someone who can help.
Replace any hoses, age and the new gas we use will start causing problems.
Get ethanol resistant hose.Any hoses from a regular auto parts are NOT E resistant.
Take the carbs apart a small bit of Seafoam won't do a good job.
Rebuild the fuel pump. The gas in the tank??Old/new?Drain,refill.

Re: awakening from 7 year hibernation

Thank you guys for your help. I am going to start by replacing the water pump parts while reading and learning about the other things that need to be done. Couple more questions:

1) If the engine start instantly after I turn the key, Do I still need to clean carbs? How complicated is carb cleaning?
2) The housing on my water pump is metal and in great shape, should it still be replaced?

I don't have a pee hole on my 85 force. Comes out of the two exhaust holes. At least it did last week when I started it. The cylinder heads were still cold after 5 min because of well water.

seamonster124 your over heat buzzer should not come on right away. The motor needs to heat up first to trigger the sensor.

Thank you guys for your help. Rip, The buzzer came on after about 1 minute.

Does the water pump housing need to be replaced every time the impeller is?

Re: awakening from 7 year hibernation

Thanks Justin! Seamonster...you must have a bad gasket, thermostat or leak somewhere or possibly buildup inside your cooling passages. My water pump housing is pitted to all hell but still pumps water good. When I repaired my powerhead I replaced my water tube bushing or seal which could be another possible culprit. When the buzzer comes on is the water jacket cool and is the head super warm to hot but not scalding? If so it could be a sensor or wiring problem.
