I was thinking the same thing.
Did you get the lower back together again? Maybe muffs not on right.
Hold your hand on the port side of the water jack to feel if cooling.

I'm not sure which gasket I should be checking?
Took out the thermostat and dropped it in boiling water, it opened and closed when cool
while I'm waiting for water pump kit I started it again and after I shut it down white smelly smoke came out the exhaust?

The two holes are not for regular running or a tell tale.
The motor might have bugs(wasps nests)built up.I bought a used 85 and after setting for 3-4 years the wasps had a hotel working in the small holes.

Did it have a sweet smell of honey?:)
Leave the thermostat out for now but replace with new one after you get running and flushed. Boiling test does not work that way unless you know the temperature.

Update. I don't know how this is possible....I added Seafoam to the gas and now the water pump is peeing!! its pretty much as much water as the above video. BUT when I shut off the engine white smoke still coming out the exhaust. What should I look into now? Thank you all so much for your advice :)

Your impellor was probably stuck and now it isn't? Anyones guess really, but gas and water are nowhere near eachother, so thats unrelated. Did you replace the waterpump?

It stopped pumping so I took down the lower unit and I'm still waiting for the pump kit from ebay.

I dont think it is steam, it sticks around for a while and it smells like burning plastic. The overheat buzzer came on again after about a minute and I'm hoping the smoke is just caused by overheating engine due to bad water pump?

You should be able to hold your hand on the water jackets and feel the water cooling the motor. I could on mine last week when I ran it.
