Backing Music....knowledge sought.

My 14yr old (Hayden) is progressing with his guitar and singing lessons.

He plays John Foggarty (Credence C. W.), and Roy Orbison DVD's, and belts out along with them.

He now wants to know how he can listen to the the DVD thru an earpiece, (so he can sing with Foggarty), but have just the music only coming thru the speakers....so if you are in the room, you will hear the music from the DVD, him singing, and him playing............no Foggarty singing.

This has come about as he has seen a lot of entertainers (on his DVD's) with ear-pieces, that he reckons they are not just ear plugs.

He goes to a band practice occasionally (adults) and listens to them trying to get everybody to a practice.

Then he went to a Tavern with us and there is a bloke (one man band) with good backing music, singing and playing to it, with a 'thing' in his ear.

We have asked at music shops, and those blokes really confuse you with technical terms to the point Hayden and I are lost.

What i think I have learnt so far is: he is looking for something that will play a DVD, but split the music down one wire and the vocal down another.

Is there such a 'thing'?
What do these one man bands use?
What is that ear-piece entertainers wear and what does it do?
Does any one know?

Cheers
Phillip

Phil, Google 'remove vocals' There are programs that can help to remove the vocals from music tracks. I would think the ear piece is a monitor speaker so the performer can hear his own voice. Nothing worse than singing off key!

Phil, what he is seeing is a superior headphone for a monitor. These are great for the musician and the sound tech ... much more monitor control without as much hassle because the monitor sound doesn't get mixed up with the house sound.

Now, to answer your question, yes and no. The "remove vocals" programs that Xcusme talks about do exactly what they say ... they REMOVE the vocals (and some of the music quality). So he would have the back-up music, but would not be hearing the vocals in his ear.

However, some "soundtracks" are produced with the "split track" feature. You need to look for these. The right channel will have some music and the lead vocals, the left track will have the music and background singers, if any. All he would have to do is send BOTH tracks to his headphones and the music only track to the audience. Our singers at Church use these all the time, however, they are sometimes harder to find.

Hope that helps.

OK.....I think I undestand......after a few hours or reading.
I now know the ear-piece is a monitor and how that works and its benefits.

Have made some phone calls to no avail.
Have ordered a Karaoke disc with 15 of Credence Clearwater songs for $30 and 7 days trial, so will see how he goes.
Apparantly you play thru the DVD, words come up on the TV.
We will see how he get on with this????

Not sure where I am going next with the "split tracks"....

Aspeck: I see it is widely available in Church music.....am I missing something......does the CD have the tracks split on it when it is recorded, or is the music split after it is played.....going thru something....maybe called a splitter.

At this point, having a split track is looking better than Karaoke, so if you know any more about split tracks then please let me know.

Personally I know this can't be difficult....just a matter of working it all out.

Thanks everybody
Cheers

Yes, the tracks are split on the initial recording so the one channel is music and background vocals and the other channel is lead vocals. The full mix CAN be sent to the monitor while the house sound gets the music and background vocal only.

Still havn't found that split music for Credence or Orbison, so went out and got him a karaoke disc with 15 numbers from Credence.
Will see how he goes with that.

(At the moment all I hear is Proud Mary.....he is trying to get the bar chords right, and he stuffs one beat in the last bar every time.)

If you come across anything Aspeck, please let me know.
Somebody has to be doing it.

Lying in bed last night, I worked out what you need is a twin CD player, that when you hit the play button, they both go off at the same instance.
You could them remove the vocals from one disc.
You could then feed the output from 1 CD to speakers, the other to headphones, and bingo.
I have an active mind.
Wife calls it daydreaming!!
