To be honest, I've seen a LOT worse stringers. Have you core sampled them? They do not appear to be in that bad of shape.

no i havn't core sampled them but a few of them seem loose or flimsy. sorry for my ignorance but when you core sample them you drill a hole through the stringer.

yep right off transmitter by gamefarm rd

I went through a resto on my '84 crestliner over the last winter/early spring, If I can find a little free time I may be able to lend you a hand, or a least line you up with some people that are very good at this! It's a project but very rewarding when done!

Core Sampling involves drilling into them with a 3/8" drill and seeing what kind of shavings you get. Light Tan and Dry then the wood core should be ok. Dark Brown and wet or Dry powder then you'll need to tear them out and replace. If they''re just loose but core's are good you can just re-tab them to the hull. If you core sample them and they are good, you can fill the holes with 3M 5200 sealant or Peanut Butter.

how did those core samples come out?.....

i agree with woodie about the condition of the strings...they actually look great.

you have to understand......here on the restoration forum.....the boats and people that post here are here because the boats really need work.
this is not always the case.....because we read about every second boat on this forum having rot.......a lot of time we get it into out heads that the strings are shot and the transom is bad....but in fact....our deck is just a little soft and we caught it in time. so all the worry about rotten wood and rotten transoms is all in vain.

yes.....there might be some rot in your boat.....but i dont think its that bad.... dont do what you dont have to....or....in other words.....if it aint broke.... !!!!

I have a question for you that nobody has asked,It might be too late but..
You got screwed,is there any way that you can contact the seller?
Did he sell you the boat "as is" claiming to know nothing about boats? What exactly did he say about the boat?
any paperwork??
I hate it when people pull this kind of crap again I am just assuming..
Please explain..

no i never did contact the seller. i'm pretty sure he had to know about some rot but he might not have known how bad it was or mybe he did. i should have known there was something wrong with it when he said the boat was "perfect". i made a beginners costly mistake but i did learn how to check a boat now. i'm pretty sure if i contact the seller he'll deny he knew.

Yep,I feel for you bud.
These people jeoperdize the safety of others and of course they only scam people who have no experience. Its really a shame.I would have gone back for sure and it would not have been pretty.on the other hand we would not have a project on our hands if you had not.You will learn a great deal on this site,With all the know how of the specialists here.
But on the other hand you could maybe still at least try and get something out of it by talking to this guy, either some cash or just to let him know that you know that he scammed you.Do you have a bill of sale?
Then when your boat is done and and pretty and shiney and better than when it rolled out of the factory send the b@$terd a picture!!
Sorry all if you think I am over reacting but I simply have no respect for anybody that sells B.S

Re: bad floor/stringers/transom please help

mike...sometimes these people really dont know !!!

they have a boat that looks good......a few minor soft spots in the floor.....the motor starts and runs...and they go out on it for a day (3 hours) pull a tube....float and swim....and they think its in perfect condition.

where i get mad is when the owner knows its rot....they try to cover it up....paint in the bilge...a rug in the ski locker....and a metal plate under the battery...
then they tell you they just did lots of work to it and its in perfect condition. well......that is just plain fraud...

Re: bad floor/stringers/transom please help

believe me i wanted to go back and it wouldn't been pretty. i just don't need to get locked up and loose my job for some dirt bag selling me a rotted out boat. i'm almost 100 percent sure he knew the rot was there. the only thing i could do is fix it. here is a stupid question the stringes are just fiberglass shells right now they feel pretty solid. what do you think about putting a couple layers of (1708) over them to make them even stronger and then there would be no more wood to rot out. just would like to hear some opinions.
