Re: bad floor/stringers/transom please help

mike...sometimes these people really dont know !!!

they have a boat that looks good......a few minor soft spots in the floor.....the motor starts and runs...and they go out on it for a day (3 hours) pull a tube....float and swim....and they think its in perfect condition.

where i get mad is when the owner knows its rot....they try to cover it up....paint in the bilge...a rug in the ski locker....and a metal plate under the battery...
then they tell you they just did lots of work to it and its in perfect condition. well......that is just plain fraud...
That stuff would not fly over here where I live..Even grannys know their boats over here!:D
He oops what happend to sbl new thread? The mods closed it?

www.uscomposites.com sells 435 resin @ about $24 bucks a gallon in 5 gallon pails. It's really good stuff and that's a very competitive price. All of their products are top of the line.

Well,Congratz on calling the guy,At least you let him know right? Now take pictures of the demo(lots)and of the resto and the end product when done,Show it to him,Then let him denie!.Or you could drop a piece of rotten transom in his mailbox.
look,This happens to a lot of people;First boat,A lot of troubles...
But when you are done you will know your boat inside and out and it will be safe.
I suggest you start reading a lot Of resto threads here on i boats.
It will help you get a feel of the journey you are about to start .
What resin you ask?
I personaly am an epoxy guy,Lots of people here dont like it because its expensive and for other reasons but if you ask ME I will say epoxy,

Food For Thought!

15 gallons of Poly Resin w/Shipping Approx $450 (That's about how much it takes to to a complete restoration on a boat)

15 Gallons of Epoxy w/Shipping $800.

Poly sets up and is ready for next layer of mat or cloth in less than an hour.

Epoxy needs 6 to 8 hours to cure.

Epoxy is Stronger and a bit more waterproof than Poly. And it does NOT require a sublayer of CSM before laying a heavy cloth.

Poly adheres well to fresh poly but NOT to Epoxy. Epoxy sticks to almost anything.

Epoxy has no UV protection so it must be coated with something to protect it from the sun.

You cannot/should not Gelcoat over Epoxy. (This is debatable but in general it is not a good practice.)

Poly STINKS to high heaven. Epoxy has very little odor.

Some people have severe allergic reactions to resins, so Proper PPE is ALWAYS needed.

thanks island mike and woodonglass yeah i was thinking epoxy but one of my good friends has a friend who does this for a living and he said he would give me a hand and he uses poly so i guess that's what were going to use. if he even comes through. if he doesn't i'll use epoxy. is epoxy any easier to work with or is poly or about the same

For my 2 cents worth.

The boat is made of poly.

The epoxy cost more than twice as much.

The poly and epoxy are applied basically the same way.

If the prep work is done correctly, the poly will last a lifetime.

Gel coat will not work with epoxy.

If you start with epoxy you can not go back to poly.

Why would you want to spend twice as much on epoxy when the boat is made of poly.

Just my thoughts. I am no pro at this.

Good luck in whatever you use.

Re: bad floor/stringers/transom please help

I only use Epoxy on Wood Boats. I use Poly on All Fiberglass boats. Even though it stinks I like it cuz it's FAST!!!! I can do 5 times more work in the same amount of time and like Decker says, once you go with epoxy there's no going back. IMHO I would recommend Poly. I posted the other so you would know both sides and be able to make an educated decision. Both have their place.

I just want to add to this.

poly resin is far stronger than a 40 footer big water boat will ever need, unless it is a off shore racing rig.....and even then...poly will be plenty strong enough....it is just that because you can do less laminate layers and save weight with epoxy.

using epoxy an a 20 foot glass boat is like putting a titanium patch on wood !....

epoxy is a fantastic product....
on a wood boat that is being glassed over....that is the tool to use. and it is a great tool !....however, we allways must consider, what is the proper tool for the job.
in the case of 20 foot glass boats....poly is the proper tool.
