Bad rectifier but can't replace right now

I've determined my rectifier on my 85 'Rude 90hp is bad by testing it per the service manual and using J. Reeves' post in the FAQ's for water cooled/35 amp rectifiers. Checked what it would cost for a new one (around $200) and my wife cringed. She would like for me to wait especially since my kids are coming out from NC for the summer.

So my question(s) are, according J.Reeves' post, these rectifiers have been known to get hot and start fires. What are the chances of that happening?

Another post I read said disconnecting the rectifier won't harm the motor since it's not needed for ignition or to allow the motor to run. True or did I mis-read that?

Lastly, I connected the gray signal wire from the wiring harness to the yellow/gray wire from the stator to determine if my rectifier or my tach was bad. Again, rec. bad, tach good. Is it safe for me to leave the gray wire attached to the yellow/gray wire on the terminal block so my tach works?

I'd like to replace it so I don't have to keep charging the battery before each trip but like I said, my kids are coming out from NC for the summer and having that extra $200 plus, can go a long way this summer.

Check on Ebay for that part, should be able to find it for alot less than that.

I seen a used one on ebay last night for $99 but I wonder how "used" it is. I'm contemplating that one.

They don't wear out ... they either work or not.

Buying a used rectifier is not a good idea.

You can use an unregulated rectifier until you decide to upgrade less than $30.

It is unusual to have a 35 Amp charging sytem on a motor like yours. Most regulated rectifiers on the V4 crossflows are 9 or 10 amp at a aftermarket cost of around $75 - $80.

I looked up the part number on Evinrude's website and using that number, looked up a replacement on eBay. The ones that came up showed them as being a 35 amp rectifier. Is that still ok?

Can you point me in the right direction (p/n, supplier, etc) where I can get one?

$30 is definitely better than $200!! :D:D

But one stupid question...where does that one mount? The one I have is on top of the motor, halfway under the flywheel  Would this one just mount on some of the bolt holes on the bypass covers?
