I've determined my rectifier on my 85 'Rude 90hp is bad by testing it per the service manual and using J. Reeves' post in the FAQ's for water cooled/35 amp rectifiers. Checked what it would cost for a new one (around $200) and my wife cringed. She would like for me to wait especially since my kids are coming out from NC for the summer.
So my question(s) are, according J.Reeves' post, these rectifiers have been known to get hot and start fires. What are the chances of that happening?
Another post I read said disconnecting the rectifier won't harm the motor since it's not needed for ignition or to allow the motor to run. True or did I mis-read that?
Lastly, I connected the gray signal wire from the wiring harness to the yellow/gray wire from the stator to determine if my rectifier or my tach was bad. Again, rec. bad, tach good. Is it safe for me to leave the gray wire attached to the yellow/gray wire on the terminal block so my tach works?
I'd like to replace it so I don't have to keep charging the battery before each trip but like I said, my kids are coming out from NC for the summer and having that extra $200 plus, can go a long way this summer.
