Sometimes stores go too far to try to get you in to shop. My mother still complains about something that happened to her probably twenty-five years ago. A local jewelry store advertised a free ring for every customer who came in on a particular day. My mother made a special trip to the store, went to the counter and asked for her free ring. The girl behind the register pulled out a little bell and rang it, gave a silly grin, and said "there's your free ring." I think my mother would have been less angry if it had been a big burly guy saying "I got yer free ring right here!" Not only has she never set foot in that store since, but she has badmouthed it to everyone she knows.
