Well i just rebuilt my carb. on a 1986 25 hp. I have great fuel flow and the motor will at least run now, however it still idles very poorly. I have rebuilt many carbs. on small motors and am very familiar with the need for a pristine cleaning. I am confident the carb is clean and rebuilt correctly.I think it may be an ignition problem due to a weak battery, but am not sure. I am using a pretty old deep cycle battery to start it. In fact, if I crank very much at all, the battery dies pretty quickly.
My questions are: Will this battery effect my motors ignition performance and possibly cause the poor idle? And if so, what voltage should I be getting from a battery to assure it is good enough to use?
Also, any battery recommendations? I want to use the electric start on the 25 hp, but also want to use my electric trolling motor. I wanted to avoid carrying 2 batteries. I did not want to carry a cranking battery and a deep cycle. Can't I just buy a good deep cycle with adequate cranking amps to start the 25 hp? Won't my 25 hp provide some type of charge to the battery when its running?
Any thoughts would be appreciated as well as a battery recommendation. I am just not that sure how battery condition would effect an outboards ignition once the motor is already started. If it does can someone please explain?
