Battery Condition Importance & Ignition

Well i just rebuilt my carb. on a 1986 25 hp. I have great fuel flow and the motor will at least run now, however it still idles very poorly. I have rebuilt many carbs. on small motors and am very familiar with the need for a pristine cleaning. I am confident the carb is clean and rebuilt correctly.I think it may be an ignition problem due to a weak battery, but am not sure. I am using a pretty old deep cycle battery to start it. In fact, if I crank very much at all, the battery dies pretty quickly.
My questions are: Will this battery effect my motors ignition performance and possibly cause the poor idle? And if so, what voltage should I be getting from a battery to assure it is good enough to use?
Also, any battery recommendations? I want to use the electric start on the 25 hp, but also want to use my electric trolling motor. I wanted to avoid carrying 2 batteries. I did not want to carry a cranking battery and a deep cycle. Can't I just buy a good deep cycle with adequate cranking amps to start the 25 hp? Won't my 25 hp provide some type of charge to the battery when its running?
Any thoughts would be appreciated as well as a battery recommendation. I am just not that sure how battery condition would effect an outboards ignition once the motor is already started. If it does can someone please explain?

Well for part of your question, I would recomend the larger interstate deep cycle battery. It costs around 100 dollars but is worth every cent. I used my last one for about 9 years before it crapped out on me. As for using it for a cranking battery, Monday i went to the lake to find my cranking battery dead because our neighbor kids were playing in the boat and left my nav lights on. I was able to swap the wires and it worked as a cranking all day without a problem. It will also run my trolling motor all day without a problem. They have good warrenties and good customer service. Just keep in mind your trolling motor will run past the point in which the starter wont work.

Your 25 has a 'mag' ignition and does not need a battery, except to start.

The charging system is very small, it is designed to recharge the starting battery and run Nav nights.

A Trolling battery is highly recommended, but do not expect to charge it off that motor unless running MORE THAN a couple of hours to your fishing hole.

So, maybe a dual purpose deep cycle with adequate cranking amps? Any brand recommendations?

2 batteries is highly recommended, from me,anyway.Limited use of the trolling motor might be ok,but if youre planning on fishing alot, youll probably run too far down for sufficient starting. As for brand, personally,Ive got 3 wal mart batteries in my boat and my dad has had 3 in his boat for 5yrs now and can still use TM all day and start all day.Get what you want and have confidence in.If its interstate, fine.=f its die hard, fine.Optima, crazy, but fine.Definately get a dual purpose and if you only go w/1 battery, use the trolling motor SPARINGLY!
