Bench Seat Paint

What type of paint do you guys use for bench seats in a boat? They will be sat on most of the time, however there will be times when they will be used to step into/out of the boat. The high gloss topside paints that seem to be most available look to be too slippery, particularly when wet. The factory paint on my boat has some texture and contrasting color flecks.

Deck paint? Would adding some non-slip stuff work? Or would that be too abrasive to sit on?

Although I'd like it to look decent, mine is not a show-boat, so utility is more important than looks.

How about marine vinyl? I would think any non-slip coating would be uncomfortable to sit on.

You could always use a non-skid paint and throw a detachable cushion over it. Best of both worlds.

While sitting on nonskid might be uncomfortable .. sitting on a shiny slippery hard surface might be very uncomfortable ..

What about putting non skid down and a towel over that when you want to sit.

But there are many ways to skin a seat .

Not really..unless you think a towel is a detachable cushion..

But yes..kinda sorta. .. Nonskid and use a secondary for your bottom side is basically the same ..

Not really, just kinda like a towel or a cushion.

I was in Home Depot yesterday and looked at the Gliden Porch and Deck Paint (Latex based). They also had some colored flakes that are normally used to provide some color contrast to painted garage floors. Any thoughts on this type of paint w/wo the flakes for the bench seats? Seems like a paint designed for an outdoor deck would have to be pretty durable and not too slippery.

Nothing against Rustoleum - I used it on my Caddigger and a number of other applications with great results - just want to explore all of the viable options.

Ayuh,... Latex paints tend to lay on top of whatever is painted...
Oil based paints are more apt to soak into whatever's painted...

Personally,... I don't think latex has any place on a boat...

Well, after reviewing the responses and searching many other posts here's where I ended up.

Base coat w/Frazee's AropPlate II, a high quality oil base exterior paint. I wanted something close to flat, but the lowest sheen available was semi-gloss.

Splatter applied using the chip brush wacked against a stick technique from one of the posts on this forum. For the Rustoleum fans, I used rustoleum enamel in black, almond and white (applied in that order).

Here's (I hope) a picture of the bench seat & hatch covers next to the factory paint job on the inside of the hull. I'm pleased with the outcome - I think after it fades a little it will be very close to the factory paint. The splatter gives the surface a little texture, which should help avoid slips when stepping on the bench.
