Arrgghh---

Honestly, I got an email update to this thread and was about to post up a tongue-in-cheek comment about after this controversy, watch the surveyor find a 15' long crack in the hull...

:faint2: Seems my joke was too close... My apologies for the premonition, this has to hurt...

(but read my last post, I swear this stuff happens for a reason)

Re: Boat buying blues !!!

Sorry your boat didn't turn out to be what you hoped for... but as someone who just spent an entire winter, a couple thousand dollars and hundreds of hours replacing a rotted transom, wet foam and a deck, trust me, you are better off. I would gladly have paid a few hundred dollars and spent more time searching for my boat if I could have avoided what you just did.

I can imagine your disappointment, but it's nothing compared to finding out that your "new" boat has serious and expensive problems.

Keep up the hunt! You'll find your boat.

Sounds like the seller may have wanted you to pull the trigger w/o the survey - Good call on waiting.

Re: Boat buying blues !!!

Yet another example of why buyers should have a used boat surveyed. Sucks that the boat is rotten......but great that the surveyor did his/her job correctly and steered you away from the boat.

Plenty of boats for sale.....you'll find "the one" eventually. Good luck.

Re: Boat buying blues !!!

Sorry to hear that now you really are having "boat buyer blues" . . . BTW - what brand/model/year of boat were you looking at? ( I do not recall seeing it in the thread)

Moisture & rot are one of the bigger problems with boats in the 20+ years of age. If you are focusing on boats of that vintage, you will almost always find some moisture, but hopefully little/no rot.

Last Fall, I bought a 33 footer at 16 years of age. The surveyor found high levels of moisture in the center of the main bulkhead . . . he advised me to "monitor" it. So, I am dealing with it now. I know that if I left it alone for a few more years, it too would be a rotted boat.

Well the upside is that you will not be buying a rotted out boat......I know when looking for a boat (especially this close to season) is a very tough emotional and anxious process but it seems that you are going about it the right way and everything happens for a reason so I think that as long as you continue to stick to your guns and have patience the right boat will come along and you will look back on this and say "thank God I didn't pull the trigger on that P.O.S." Good luck with your hunt!!

Maybe ???

Over in his other thread . . . probably . . . nice sleuthing :thumb: . . . 20 years old would make it a 1993 +/-

OP - Think about how much money you've already saved as a result of what you've spent!

Going forwards, you could probably save yourself some money if you learn a few of the tricks that the surveyor used to check the boat - not with the intent that you might buy without paying for a survey but to be able to decline a purchase without the need to spend on a survey first.

Sorry to hear how things turned out but you are SOOOOOOO much better off for having had the survey and NOT having bought the boat. I know it doesn't do you any good to hear this from a total stranger but there are plenty of other boats out there and you WILL find yours eventually. Just keep plugging.

...The topper is that I still have not received back the deposit from the first deal gone sour and I am nervous about the prospect of having trouble getting the second one back...

If the checks haven't cleared yet; place a "Stop Payment" on them with your bank.

Note: Many Stop Payment Orders are in effect for 6 months or a year.
After that, the holder can resubmit them and they WILL clear!
Most people don't know this, and give up after the first attempt and rejection.

Re: Boat buying blues !!!

That's what scares us, but we can't just buy it outright without a survey first. The prospect of buying the boat from hell scares us more!

You are right to be that way. No matter how much you like the boat, unless you can afford to just throw your money away, do not buy it just because somebody else might beat you to it. Make sure it's seaworthy first. Running it on the muffs isn't enough.

Trust me. I know. I fell in love with my boat, was warned repeatedly but ignored the warnings and bought it anyway. After sinking (pardon the phrases) roughly 7 times what I paid for it in repairs and restoration, I've got a good, reliable and seaworthy boat. But it's still a 27 year old boat.
