Re: Boat flooring

So I guess I will have to remove the transom board on mine, I replaced the old one last year with a piece of of preasure treated lumber, the trouble is it's a 2 inch thick piece of stock and even if I laminate two 3/4 pieces of ply together im still going to be 1/4 inch shy so I am going to have to buy two pieces of plywood to make a new transom.

Re: Boat flooring

If it's pressure treated, I don't think it's actually 2"... Unless you ripped down 4X stock or have access to dimensioned lumber I've never heard of, which is possible, although unlikely :watermelon:

Typical PT lumber might still be 'green' enough to be 1 5/8" think rather then the nominal 1 1/2" of typical 2X6 or 2X8's.... If it's been in the boat since before last May, unless you are in a VERY humid & very damp locale, it's probably seasoned some & dried out. It's probably closer to the standard 1 1/2" then it is to it's original 1 5/8" thickness....

Two pieces of 3/4" make up 1 1/2" you would be 1/2" shy. If you can find 5/8" and triple it up you would 1/8" shy.

On an older plank bench boat like yours, transom thickness isn't that critical and you'll be fine with 1-1/2" thickness unless you plan on putting a bigger motor than a 150 hp on it.

You could also use 7/8" plywood.

One good way to laminate plywood for a transom is polyester resin with cabosil or wood flour. Mix it up until you get peanut butter consistency. Don't overdue the clamp pressure. After it dries, you want 2 or 3 coats of spar varnish or go nuts and encapsulate it in resin and light fiberglass. That glass will add at least 1/8" thickness.

Re: Boat flooring

Ok, I'm sorry, I wasn't clear, what I meant was I used a 2x10 which is 1 3/4 inch thick, so if I use 2 pieces of 3/4 I will have a piece 1 1/2 inches thick which is 1/4 inch less than I need, the way the back of my boat is built there is a 2 inch space between the back of the boat and the braces that are in front of the transom board so if I only go with 1 1/2 inch thick board I will have a 1/4 inch space between the braces and the transom board.

Re: Boat flooring

4 pieces of 1/2" plywood laminated together will give you the 2" and you can get all 4 pieces out of a single sheet of plywood probably.

More of your own laminations is actually stronger because exterior plywood allows voids in internal plys. Thinner plywood/more lamination = less plys with voids !

Re: Boat flooring

If it's truly 2" then you can laminate 4 Pieces of 1/2" ext. Grade to get the 2" thickness.;)
