Boat is 2002 but the manufacturing date on the motor is 2000 is that right?

boat 2002 motor says 2000 OMC lookup says 2001 if i look at the below link.

I have a high degree of confidence the engine is the one that came with the boat but I am the third owner so I do not know for fact.

1) If my boat is 2002 could it have come with a engine manufactured in 2000?
2) If the engine shows manufacturing date of 2000 why when i look up the model number it says 2001?

Could have been a dealer upgrade/switch. Very common.

Model years are relative, not actual. A 2011 engine could have easily been built in July of 2010.

So is my engine 2000 or 2001? The model lookup says 2001. not sure what the break down is for model years and which years were the same. I know I bought a 2002-2007 Seloc manual thinking I had a 2002 and that is not the case.... ugggghhhh

The Seloc manuals are so generic it probably doesn't matter one way or the other.

This is why you order parts, by model number, not the model year.

OK its a 2001. If I lookup the model number on various site out here on the web and use the Johnson/Evinrude code and translate teh model number to a year it comes out to 2001. Thanks.

It's no different with cars, in a month or so you will see the new 2012 cars at the dealerships for sale - and it will only be half way through 2011.

you see that a lot with Yamaha--it takes a while from the time it leaves the assembly line floor in Japan until it is hung on a transom of a new boat in South Carolina. In fact, Yam says it is doig away with "year" because it's irrelevant. Good luck with that one; the market says the buyers still want to know.
Engine hours are more important than chronological age during the first 10 years but even that is not a good measuring stick. After that, it's condition.

Unlike most cars the OB tends not to change for a few years and then there will be a major change--sometimes mid year (I have a mid-80's OMC 70 that defies identification by year but it's different than the one I had before). But I read somewhere that the old Merc's (60's-70's) were famous for frequent quirky changes.

Almost all the engine manufacturers quit using year designation for models and anything you buy new is a current model, regardless when it was made.

That's interesting. How do you know the year of your motor if you bye one second hand.?.?.?... I know you can go by hours but still. 10 years from now when I want to buy a used Honda or Yahmy I look up the model number and it says it was manufactured years 2011-2018. Was my engine put into service in 2011 or in 2005 or in 2018 etc... That would be a huge determining factor on how much I would pay for the engine regardless of hours don't you think?

when buying a 10 year + old motor, the model year is the lease of the buyer's concerns (or should be). You buy the motor with best compression, best wiring, best maintenance record. period. for instance, i would rather stick with my 30 year old inline 6 than trade it for a 2005 opti that has a rod hanging out the block.

It's no different today if you want to buy a NEW Yamaha or Merc. Would you pay the same for a motor that is still in the crate but has sat for 4 years or one that was manufactured just a few months ago?
