Re: Boat Ramp Repair

That's why you don't ask permission, and let a minimum amount of people see you do it. It's also why there's all the red tape and the city will likely never fix it. You do it on a wednesday afternoon (at my boat ramp there isn't a soul there through most of the week), someone trips or whatever and the city has no record, there is no record of anybody fixing it, so Mr. Clumsy is SOL. AND, the city isn't going to be calling the FBI to try and find the guy who fixed the pothole. They'll just be able to prove it wasn't them.

Fix it yourself. DEFINITELY don't blow a tire or anything. You prove that it's not a safe functioning ramp and they'll definitely close it before they fix it (In a year or so).

Many years ago I lived in a Chicago suburb and our street had a 40' wide parkway in the center. I and all the neighbors on our block decided to mow it once a week (compared to the city doing it twice a summer with a tractor mounted brush hog), trim the trees and put a few flowers in. So what happened? You guessed it, the city had a fit and we each had to pay a $100 fine. Seems the folks on down the street complained to high heaven that thier parkway looked so drab and demanded the city "do something" to make us all equal. Grrrrr....

There you go. PERFECT example.

You won't be liable for anything unless you "officially" fix it. Those people got in trouble because they're mowing the lawn every week. If nobody knows who fixed the ramp they can't go after elves that did it in the middle of the night.

Well, that sounds like the Chicago union machine got involved.

Since you actually own to the center of the roadway, with the city only holding an easement to it, you should be able to mow, plant, play, on the median as you wish, without reprimand.

Actually, in the neighborhood where I used to live, the residents of the cul-du-sac were responsible for the mowing.

I wouldn't attempt this on my own. How about making a annomynous phone call to the city about a "pot-hole" that needs repaired? Better yet, make a bunch of calls, and get all your friends to call in too. Maybe it'll work.

Re: Boat Ramp Repair

Since I posted a couple of weeks ago I have had the opportunity to talk with our local conservation commission regarding the removal of two trees that have fallen close to our dock over the winter. Good news for us, we can cut up the trees (after we get the permits) as long as we do not disturb the banking and uprooted stumps. Turns out there are significant fines for disturbing river banks at both the state and federal levels. The bad news by the way is that dragging the wood back onto the bank will be considered disturbing the bank, so we have to tow them up river to the nearest landing and have them trucked away.

I'll re-iterate my point, don't do it. Doing this sort of thing without permission and permits is illegal. My counter to the 'don't tell anyone and just do it camp' is that penitentiaries are almost exclusively populated by people who figured they could do something illegal and not get caught. Look how well that work out for those folks.

Well vie decided to wait a bit. The city stores their docks during the winter by the launch so they will have to do something to just get the docks in the water. They will need a boat to bring the docks down stream where they are for the season. I'll see what they do with it and until then I'm still ninja suit shopping.

Well I'm glad I took the high road on this one! The Town received a huge donation to fix up that exact launch. They broke ground today! I pulled the proposed plan and it's going to be a full paved ramp. Paved parking lot for 20 trucks and trailers, bathrooms, sitting area, and best of all multiple docks! This ramp was originally only half paved no docks, no parking lot, nothing but a rough path to the water that you could get a truck down. I guess I don't mind having to pay a little bit in taxes when things like this happen. What a great country!
