I'm not getting full speed or rpms either and have tried different props! Have a couple friends with the same setup and there fine. 19p prop only 4000 rpm at 31mph. I'm losing power somewhere! Gonna check point gap , timing and advance then carb.

Timing help please!!!!.....

Timing help please!!!!.....

Ok so my timing was way off and when i say way off it was not even close to the tab! It's a mercruiser 3.0 140hp. year 1985. From what iv'e read timing should be 6 before tdc. Now my question is when i adjust the timing it makes it idle faster! So should i start with the idle at 700rpms then set it then turn the idle down with the idle screw?

Re: Timing help please!!!!.....

You should set your idle, then set your base timing, keep adjusting until right because one will affect the other.

Ok guys so the timing was way off! Problem im having is when i adjust the timing to specification the idle goes up so do i set it then turn idle down at adjustment screw? Should it speed up or slow down while turning the distributor?

Points or DDIS?

With DDIS you need to get the engine into base timing mode. (obviously with points you don't)...

But with either system, adjust the idle speed down to 700, then start moving the timing. If the idle speed changes, adjust it back to 700 as you move the timing. The spec for timing is x degrees at 700rpm...

Re: Timing help please!!!!.....

Points... No wires to cut/disconnect/join.... Just run the engine, point the timing light at the marks and adjust to 6 degrees BTDC....

(The 'x' was just representative of any number. I hadn't looked it up, just making a point)

Because the timing advance is affected by engine speed. Set the idle speed at 700, start adjusting the timing. If the idle speed changes (and it will), adjust the idle speed back to 700, and keep adjusting until you have 6 degrees BTDC at 700.....

You're started this question in another thread, and I've given you the full answer on it there....

Please don't start 2 threads on the same issue... VERY confusing, for all of us....

Re: Timing help please!!!!.....

You might (will) want to check that the advance mechanism inside the distributor is working properly.... Use the advance chart in the service manual and check that the timing is doing the right thing as the engine speed increases...

This manual sucks! What should the timing advance to when accelerating? I need to just buy a manual instead of using online versions! Everything has been checked its the timing! I have it set at 6? before FCC just need to know how much it should advance.

Re: Boat running bad!!!!... Won't hit full rpms!!!!...

Thanks! I noticed when I changed the timing I got ticking sound from the engine. Kinda hard to judge the advance because the marks only go to 12? but I'm sure I can eyeball it. It help the boat a little bit now I can get over 4000 rpms but something still isn't right! It doesn't stall so easy while giving throttle but when wot it kinda revs up and down a little. And my idle sticks a tiny bit it doesn't like to got back down to regular idle unless you tap the lever by the carb!!!!.. I'm going to have to break down and take it to the damn marina!!!!... arrrrrgh
