Re: Borg Warner Velvet V Drive Reverse Rotation

good thing I dont do this for a living :)
however, other than a few models most modern clutches CAN be converted for left or right output with a left hand input.
like I say, its how its been done for the past 10-15 years.
there are a few models that CANNOT be converted but its stated in the manual. I dont think the 1.5/1 is one of them that cannot.
most modern circulating pumps for marine use are bi-directional. to convert from left to right rotation will require the correct cam, correct distributer correct starter and the correct rear main seal.the use of a left hand seal on a right hand engine will create a leak.
over the past 10 years I have set up quite a few boats with 2 left hand engines and counter rotating props. getting right hand bigblock GM's has been mostly impossible for the past 10 years. you can still find the odd 5.7 in right hand but no 7.4,8.2 or 8.1s in right hand rotation.
if you install a pair of big blocks you will convert the clutch or replace it with a convertable model.

This is what the man has/needs.

velvetdrive.com/techinfo/V7172/V7172pg4.pdf

See anything about using reverse shift patterns? And I ain't talking about
"most models of transmissions" we are talking about 71c/72c BW or Velvet drive transmissions( What the man has).

jpc0707 already has a righthand rotation engine in the boat, and I was
bringing up the cost difference of repairing what he has vs replacing
the V-drive. Assuming there is something wrong with the engine/s.

Get your right hand rotation parts here, and you don't have to change the whole distributor just the drive gear.

Camshafts are available from Crane

Comp cams part# 413 for the distributor drive gear

Felpro makes the rear seals if you cant' get them from Merc.

Starters here

And I'll stand corrected on the circulation pumps as long as it is made sure that the impeller flutes are straight and not angled or curved.

Personally since there is an existing right hand engine I would keep it the same but then i don't buy pre-assembled engines either. Which are available.

Re: Borg Warner Velvet V Drive Reverse Rotation

the question was about options to repower with 2 standard rotation engines.
other thn that we dont even know which engines he has.
some of the stuff simply isnt avalible anymore, especially if your dealing with fords and chyslers.
to my knowledge no one has marinized an EFI engine for right hand rotation, however the list of stuff I havent seen tends to grow.
but on most modern stuff there is no sense in the added cost of turning the engine to the right.
here in the salt pond if its not freshwater cooled and its over 7 years old its pretty much junk. the cast iron tends to rot, makes torqeuing heads and intakes fun.

Re: Borg Warner Velvet V Drive Reverse Rotation

The boat already has the proper tranny and Vdrive combination. All he is doing is changing engine direction, not output shaft direction.
In that case, you just turn the pump on the engine over. NOT the shift cable direction.
If you don't change the pump, it just won't work at all. The pressure ports in the tranny would be on the suction side of the pump.
