I was wondering what my Iboats brethren think about this.

I recently FINALLY got a job. I'm a hangar manager for a corporate jet hangar at a nearby airport. I'm responsible for all aircraft movement in and around the hangar as well as upkeep of the facility, etc etc etc. I also got a side job working on one of the hangar owners airplanes, doing light stuff.

Well, this new hangar manager job requires a cell phone. Prior to having this job, I didn't have a cell phone. I didn't want one, didn't need one. Well, my boss and I came to an agreement that since the job required it and I didn't have one to begin with, he would cover the full cost of the phone and plan. Well, I told him since he was doing that, to set me up in his office with a phone (corded, land line) and I would call around and find the cheapest plan that would satisfy the needs of the job. So for 2 hours I went back and forth doing just that. I finally found one for 59.99 a month unlimited text and mobile to mobile. The total cost with all the FCC fees and bull**** is 67.01 per month.

Well, now my boss is saying that he never agreed to FULL cost, only to 63 dollars a month. (where he got that number I will never know because I said it would cost 59.99 a month, not knowing about all the little fees) I reminded him about our deal and he said "Well the phone is a requirement of the job, you gotta try to meet me in the middle." I finally just said ok, fine, I'm not going to fight you over 4 bucks a month.

I still think it's pretty ****ty of him to go back on his word like that. I mean.....we had agreed that since I didn't have a phone and the ONLY reason I would have one was this job, that his company would pay for it. Now he's saying he only agreed to 63 a month. Well, this month is the month where the activation fee hits, 114 bucks total, he's only paying 63. I know I have no legal grounds to go after him, but am I the only one that thinks that's pretty damn ****ty of him? He is a multi-millionaire, and won't pay the final 4 damn dollars each month. Basically I work for free for 15 minutes every month to pay for a phone I don't want. This does not include the 50 bucks I'm tagged this month for that ****ing phone.

Remember, this phone, per agreement, was not supposed to cost me a DIME.

This was more a rant than anything. Thanks for hearing me out.

I think iboaters are wise enough to not judge after hearing only one side of a disagreement.

I agree with youthat it's pretty crappy but it's not uncommon. The "handshake deal" and actual deal are quite often not the same. If you let it, it'll eat you up and take up quite a bit of your time. I've find myself in similar positions quite often and you just have to decide how much you can live with.

Just a few years ago, I had to get the OSHA 40 hour HAZMAT course on my own as a condition of continuing employment. It's clearly not right but it's just something you live with or seek employment elsewhere.

Sounds typical. To my way of thinking where you messed up was offering to search and find a phone and plan. You should have let him do all that, then him hand you the phone when it was ready to go and then there would have been no question or problem since he was requiring you to have a phone for the job.

The deal in itself seems a bit messy.

Phone contract in his name or yours?
Long term contract?
No contract?

It seems to me, If it was my decision, I would have gone for a free phone.
Or a cheap phone no contract.

There are deals out there for $30 a month.
Or you could have piggybacked a line off a friend, or the boss, for about $10 a month.

When the company I work for required me to have a cell phone they arranged every thing. Handed me a cell phone and said here's your new phone number here's what the plan covers. Done deal.

Boost Mobile with walkie talkie unlimited is $50.00 per month. Plans as low as $30.00 per month. Boost phones are as cheap or expensive as you want them to be. Runs on Sprint service. I currently have Straight Talk $30.00 per month $30.00 for the phone. Runs on Verizon service.

Probably the reason he's a multi-millionaire, tight-fisted with his money! Some times you just have to eat it to maintain your job....guess we've all had to at one time or another....I know I have!

I agree, it's a little late to be crying over spilt milk.

I have learned to do all my research, before presenting it to the higher-ups. $59.99/month does not equal $67/month plus the first month at $114. If you have presented the $67+$114 to the owner and he balked, you could have asked him to look for something more affordable. As it sits now, you are both stuck with plan that was purchased.

You know, this could be a lesson/wake-up call from the new boss. If you are going to show me something, you had better be right, or pay the consequences.

Just imagine what the owner is thinking; "Jeeze, this guy can't even buy a cell phone and get that right" (Money wise that is, and since he's a millionaire, that's on his mind)

First off, why text messaging????
Second off, why unlimited talk, how much of your day is going to be takin up by using the cell phone, no land line????

And last thought, if the guys loaded (self made), there is a reason for that, play your cards close to your chest.

I would have gone with a pay-as-you go plan (per minute/text) for a little bit to see just how much it was actually used. Then, after a few weeks/months, select a plan (or stay with the pay as you go) best fitted for your useage. My wife and I have AT&T's Go Phone and it has been fantastic for us. It can literally be as cheap as $25 every 3 months if we don't talk much.

Also, I think fishrdan nailed it. This guy didn't get rich by letting people nickle and dime him (even though it isn't really your fault).

I agree with rbh. And, in this day and age, you need a cell phone. I fought it for the longest time as well but pretty soon you will realize that you have no idea how you got along without it.

People in the world would pay 30X that (4$/day) just to have a job.

Pick your battles. Do not argue with the hand that feeds you or you may be surprised when he let's you go.

What if you had to pay to park daily, pay a toll on a road or if the job was $4 more in gas per day???

OMG Time to evaluate before he find's a worker with a cell phone or one that will not complain.

Oh I know. My point was there are people who would be willing to spend $4 per day just to have a job and WITF is upset about less that 14 cents per day.

That figures to 9.6 footlongs per year before taxes.
