Thanks! That is two good ideas in one and it makes a ton of sense when you look at the engine. One would have to ask "if it is that easy then why didn't the engineers design it that way?". If you look at the engine while thinking about it then the puzzle unfolds itself. Awesome. Higher noise was an engineering decision to protect users from possible muffler burns. The rear of engine has a carrying handle and the muffler is crammed into a small area safe from fingers.
TYVM. the light of understanding is on now. yes. this might just work. if it does, then i'm dumping the canoe and getting a jon. No need for paddle if i got a gas engine that can eat weeds and muck.
And why don't you just get a small inline muffler from something else (along with the stock muffler) and just face it down towards the water. It doesn't need to be in the water, just below the transom to reflect the noise away from the operator
