I think my oil dipstick is broken and fell into the oil pan. I took off the oil tube with vice grips but I do not see the end of the dipstick.

I am worried that this may cause a problem.

I put the stick back in and the tube. I am getting a new dipstick.

Will that dipstick cause a problem?

Any insight to this problem would be appreciated.

I have a 3.0 Liter 4 cyl. engine. (GM 2.5)
OMC Cobra. Four Winns Boat. Inboard.

HELP?

Has the entire dipstick broken off and all that's left is the finger grip? Or did just a portion of the dipstick break off? If so..how much?

Walt

from the full marking down broke off. I would say about an inch.

My father who was a service manager for years for a chevrolet dealership said that it will just sit in the bottom of the oil pan.

I am not so sure.

He said the oil flow does not pump hard enough to pick something like that up.

What do you think?

In this case...I think father knows best. The odds of this causing a problem are so small...it isn't worth messing with. However, if you are worried about it...I suggest draining the engine oil and try to fish the busted dipstick piece out with a flexible magnet. If you get it out...great! If not, well...I wouldn't sweat it.

Walt

Get a large magnet and stick it to the bottom of your oil pan. That will hold it in place. They also make a oil pan plug with a magnet on it. They are used when you do a top end rebuild to pick up any left over metal shavings left in the motor.

Does that work on a crusader engine? If i were to buy a magnet do I literally just throw it on the bottom of the oil pan...Would that little end of the dipstick be drawn to it.

You probably don't even need the magnet lildiva. If the piece is bigger than your oil pump pick-up tube screen then it cannot really cause any issues. This is not a Crusader pic, and I do not know exactly what they use, but this is a good example:

You are looking at this upside down, but imagine the little piece of dipstick, and then note that ALL of the oil that your engine circulates must go through that screen first. You can see that although it is not a great thing to have anything swishing around in the bottom of your oil pan except oil, there is no real chance of it getting past the pick-up screen, so it cannot find it's way through your oil pump and into the rest of your engine. The magnet would help keep it in one place, but either way this is probably no bigger deal than needing a new dipstick . . .

Edit: I was gonna say the same thing Bondo, but I guessed that lildiva was a woman, and we have precious few of those kind here, so I indulged. Some pretty good searching there too. BTW, welcome aboard whoever you are . . . :)

This thread sure took an interesting turn, and it's the same with oil pump drives if it's laying in the bottom of the pan it's a non issue, doesn't matter how many big waves you hit.
