Lumber yard man says I need to glue sub-floor (3/4 tounge&groove)to floor joist before nailing. I don't mind spending the money on liquid nails but that will be hard to do 20' up walking on 2x10's. Is this a common practice in building construction? Plus I'm not as young as I once was. But I'm good once as I ever was. Huumm, sounds like a country song.

Yes, It keeps the floor from squeaking. :).
It is possible that the builder failed to apply a flooring adhesive to the subfloor before placing the wood floor down. Failure to use floor adhesive allows the subfloor and the wood top layer to rub against each other and generate a squeak.

Re: Building Question

I have done it in new construction and yes..... a simple bead of liquid nails does make it very quiet. Regardless if it is your home or a customer's ...... a bead of liquid nails prevents "hunting" down that single annoying squeak that someone will find. ;)

Re: Building Question

So you are getting the decking on the cabin, hey?

Yes , it is common practice. Do it all the time.

I do not know your local codes, but to me it would be irrelevant considering what you are building. The height of you place and flex of the poles would make me want to glue the heck out of that sub-floor, and use plenty o fasteners 8 inches O.C. That should help prevent racking of the structure and future squeaks, etc.

Just pull 4 foot centers across the joists and mark them, glue as you go. I use the foam glue, but any subfloor adhesive will do you right.

Re: Building Question

Yep M180 just shopping around for the cheapest t&g. Yesterday was the last day of classes and I'm out for 3 weeks. Not sure If I will get any thing done, rain is moving in and really cold for this part of the country. Even colder with wind coming across the lake 20 foot up. Not sure if I can handle 4x8 plywood with wind blowing 20 MPH. And from what the county admistrator tells me their really is no building codes as of yet inside the levy. They are working on that now. So I'm kinda going by what codes are avalible in Merigold. Can't be that much different except elevation. Any way I'll just do what I can as weather permits. It needs to have it inhabitable by 2012. But things are going really slow untill I get a floor down.

Sorry, second nature to me. Starting at one end of the structure, measure 4 foot increments along the joists, making marks at 4, 8 12 etc. That way when gluing up the joists, one knows the area to glue so that the rest of the surface is walkable ( it gets really slippery and sticky) So do a 4 x 8 area at a time.

If you do risk it.. tie a a rope to your waist and set up a video camera :)

Sorry, second nature to me.

Thanks. Not being snarky. I haven't gotten the lingo down, but am tempted to build my next home, so any learning in between now and then is helpful.

Squeaks can be good if you want to know somebody is coming in and you can't see them but you can hear them coming, got one in my hallway and I always know when anyone is coming to see me it is like my own personal doorbell:D:D:D

Re: Building Question

Autotech- You call that cold?:D Sorry, could not resist. But 20 mph is a lot for sheeting the deck. I like the safety line / video idea for that....
No codes? have fun! Seriously though, gluing is best practice.

I , too , built in a flood prone area, but not like in you case with the Levee- must be damp there, which brings me to a point about the longevity of your plywood while under construction. Even though some of the sheeting products have some really great adhesives and moisture resistance, they are prone to de-laminating at some point and if the place is going to be open for a while it might not be a bad idea to paint the sheeting after getting it down.

I did this painting thing on my current house, a project that I cut the roof off in winter and added a second story (amongst other things) and could not be happier. Best $ I ever spent. Took a couple months to weather it in (rain/sleet/blizzard/ electrical fire /snow delays) and the 10 gal of paint worked like a charm. Also made cleanup easier and the chalk lines showed up perfectly.

Lowkee- no worries. no offense taken . I sometimes have to read things on this site several times to figure them out when guys are in their language.
Get used to -
Hey bud , get me another jack rafter with an RCH off the tail and put a couple more degrees of bevel on that bird mouth. Then tighten up the ridge cut and add an 1/4 to the whole chord.
The wall is all out of plumb here!
Darn mason! Darn electrician! Darn anybody! ( but me)
What , you are not supposed to cut that??????
I did not see that LVL was structural in the prints....
Looks fine from my house....

Re: Building Question

m180 you paint both side or just the top. Will Liquid nails work as well on painted surface. Cold yep. Came up to Madison Wi one time for a week to a class in July felt like our weather in January. Did not want to stay till it got real cold. I will say this though that was one of the cleanest cities I have ever been in. Rented a car just to look at the country side since I've never been there before. Ya'll had badgers for road kill we got armidillos and deer.

I just do the top and edges with oil based primer after I install the ply. No real worries about the underside, if you have 2 sealed surfaces the wood can not breath. Its gonna get wet somehow while under construction, so you gotta let it dry out somewhere. Leave the bottom alone.

You know, I have never seen a badger, save on the sports field:D. Plenty of deer though. And yeah, Mad Town is pretty cool, very well kept. Thanks for noticing.

Re: Building Question

Bob what I dont get is this floor for the tree house? most floors with the floor joist on 16 inch centers only use 3/4 inch t+g or plywood anyways and nothing more.
