Re: But I NEED a BIG car.

Getting to be about time to buy a new car and trade the Buick in. Sounds easy enough, I mean there are hundreds of makes to choose from right? Well, not that I can fit in comfortably. I'm 6' 7" and weigh in around 220 - 230 and I simply don't fit in most cars. Some not at all, and others I can wear like a pair of snug undershorts but not much in the way of a comfortable road car I can carry all my work gear with me.

We tend to have multiple vehicles for different uses. A pickup, my go fast toys, the wifes economy miser, etc. but I've always had a large four door sedan for working on the road. Something I can carry a week or two's clothes including a suit or two, work boots as well as dress shoes, a couple computers and maybe a dozen different programmable controlers and modules to go with them as well as my tools. If Mrs. Bubba goes with me on a trip you can double (triple?) the stuff that goes with us.

After looking I've hit a wall, no one is really building that sort of car any more. Even Caddy's and Lincoln's (and Buick) have been downsized to the point they don't fit the bill. Oh I've found a couple I can manage to "wear" but comfortable they aren't and once I'm in the drivers seat you may as well take the rear seat out because no one is going to fit back there. Found a couple more with decent cabin room but the trunk is all but useless. It just seems that no matter what the over all down sizing of cars means you have to give up useable space in one area or the other. :(

Maybe I'll try to find a 1955 Buick RoadMaster and rebuild it...

I would think that if you can fit into that camaro you hit that deer in you can fit into about any mid sized car... camaros aren't that roomy.

Well i just figured because he was 6 inches taller and 100lbs bigger, you might actually fit.

Oh I "fit" more or less, I drove a new one when I learned Buick dropped the Lucern (my current car) for a couple years for a redesign. Comfortable for 1000 miles? Not so much.
Their are plenty of used "little old man/little old lady" Lucern's out there with low miles, people who died, had to stop driving, went into nursing homes, etc., check it out.

Bubba, take a look at the 2005 or so ford 500/mercury montego. My buddy is 6'7". Mostly legs and he bought this because he fit in it. They are actually really good cars, just never took off. The are built on the Volvo s80 frame and very durable. For that matter take a look at the s80. Crazy comfortable car. I am 6'4" and it has no problem in any direction for me. My salesman has one and I spent a week driving around the Carolina's with him. I felt like leaving him a tip as my back felt better after a week in that car...

or just pick up a low mileage 2011 Grand Marquis or civilian Crown Vic and drive it until 2021 - they will last a decade no problem... the adjustable pedals in those help for tall people.

here's a 2011 basically new - 178 miles on it

This would be my pick, affordable, decent quality and they ride better than a Cadillac.

^^^^^ Those are nice cars. If a sedan fit the bill, a Grand Marquis would probably be my choice.

I didn't care for the Chrysler 300. It was a nice driver, but the layout inside wasn't well done. Haven't looked in the new Chargers yet.

think European - VW and Audi larger sedans always seem to fit tall people, whether it's in the torso or the legs.

If that isn't the ugliest car you can buy, not sure what is! :)

Bubba have you looked at a Chevy Impalla? I'm 6'8" about 160 have enough room, they make some nicer than others but I have head room, and leg room but have to admit when I take a head on will be about a foot and half shorter.

You may want to check out the new Chargers. My dad is 6'4" and fits fine in my wifes '06............ Granted, you have a few extra inches....

it looks like the Shak ( Shakial O'Neil) gets into the Buick pretty easy. Haven't you seen the commercial?

I am with everybody on the crown vic grand marquis Idea, I have driven many a miles in them, but I will add a twist to it. They are god awful but a Mercury Marauder isn't that bad. There are a bunch of them with hardly any miles. Whats not to like, big as hell, comfy as your living room couch and fast as a mustang ;)

Re: But I NEED a BIG car.

It sounds to me like it's Cadillac XTS time. No question you'll fit and the ride is smooth as Robin's egg. Plus, there's 40" of room between the backseat and the front seat so that should give you all the stretch-out room you could need, even at 6'7". It ain't gonna be cheap, but what is these days?

Some of the newer cars look smaller than they are too, I've found. Have a cousin that just got a new Jaguar and while I thought it was "much smaller" than the Jags of old I was blown away by the roominess inside. Engine compartments & hoods have gotten more compact, but some of the cabins are surprising. PLus, we have to face facts: the EPA has strangled automakers so much they've had no choice but to eliminate the big roadliners of yesteryear, that coupled with fuel costs of course. It's not all the manufacturer's fault, because if you think about Ford eliminating the Crown Vic that tells you something. I'm sure if they could still build them and find a way to keep the "average" in line and sell enough to police departments, they probably would because there's no telling how many of those units they sell a year. But, every city in the country is looking for a way to cut costs and I'm sure the PD's fuel bill is tops on the list.
No buyers = no need for the model.

Like they say; "It is what it is".

Re: But I NEED a BIG car.

I recently rented a new Crown Vic in AZ because that's all they had on the lot by the time I got there. It was large but was like stepping back into the mid 1990's technology and styling wise. The 4.8 was a dog as well and mpg's were suprisingly bad as compared to my larger v8 suv's. The design was so so amazingly dated, you could just feel the demographic as you sat in it.

Re: But I NEED a BIG car.

You might think I'm crazy, but have you looked on a Hyundai lot?

Granted I'm not your size, but I bought a 2012 Sonata and the size is incredible. Although I'm only 5'10" I can also fit my rear facing 32lb boat anchor of a car seat in the back seat behind the driver seat for my kid. Few cars can do this. I only mention because the Sonata is in the middle of the Hyundai line up.

Just a thought, they may have something comfortable for you.

Re: But I NEED a BIG car.

Tough finding a vehicle that "fits" for bigger folk. Our Pontiac Grand Prix and Chevy Trailblazer were bought with me fitting into it comfortably as a prime concern. Now we have 2 vehicles that work nicely for us they don't make them any more !!! Going to be in the same situation when it is our turn to start looking again.
Good Luck, I will be watching this thread with interest to see what you end up with.

Re: But I NEED a BIG car.

I know your problem well. I'm 6'3/240 and my best friend is 6'10/340. We didn't fit into most cars back in the day, and its only getting worse. My wife drives a newer Civic. Love the 40+mpg, but hate the sardine-can feel when I'm in it. My daily driver is a 66 Mustang Conv, so I don't have headroom or legroom issues. Best road trip car I ever drove was a Honda CRX-HF. I got 55+mpg with the AC blowing, yet I had to scoot the seat UP because they were built to fit people like my friend. With the hatchback, you've got plenty of room for a week's worth of clothes, etc. Try to find a 89-92 CRX thats clean and have the engine/trans rebuilt, if necessary. You'll never want to get rid of it.
