Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Plan on going out tonight. After getting blown around one night 4 years ago I decided that I would only chance nights that forecast 0-15 mph winds. Been very few of them this year and I had plans already. The forecast is 15-20 with no gusts tonight, I thinking okay in the coves. Anybody agree?

Just saw the post..did you go, and how was it if you did.
15-20 at night isn't huge, providing your boat is big enough to safely handle those conditions. If so, you should be ok in the coves.

Man it was hot @ t-bar yesterday. My thermometer read 117, and I had to work on the boat.

No I didn't go. My cutoff was 3pm and wind was really blowing hard so I made other plans. The wind did die down about 6pm and was great the next morning. It would have been a good night.

Thanks for the tip. Most trees is the desert have water lines going to them. Pitching a tent under the tree seems appropriate. You would think there would be markers in a camp ground for tents? Or was it late and a few beers.

Still lovin T-Bar!! this year has been real spotty for some reason on the bighorn, and I haven't even seen the coyote that was a regular around the ramp last year. We seem to see them (bighorn) mostly up the lake toward echo or big sandy. we have only been all the way to sandy twice this year and echo once but no wildlife - other than some partyers up at sandy point

I don't think there are marked out areas for tents in the LMNRA campgrounds. You just find the most level area(depending on how many you've had :D) and set up camp.

It was at calville bay and we had a big 12 person tent,it was staked far enough away from the trees trunk that we thought for shure no problems. This was set up sober, should have known better! LOL
I think they ran short on pvc and short cutted through staking area a little.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

Here's something cool and out of the ordinary for the desert. They have a resident bald eagle down at Willow Beach. I've seen him/her several times and the first time I saw it I had to double take several times. On my last trip I was fishing right next to where it was perched up high on a peak when a gov. boat pulled right in front of me. I let them slide as they were checking out the bald eagle.

For all you full time Mead boaters, you'll have to portage around Hoover Dam to check it out :D

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I took the kids out to Echo this past weekend and I could have sworn the lake came up 6" while we were there, visited the same beach over 2 days and it looked higher.

Hey Red, have you used the new low water launch ramp at Echo yet? If so, is it lit up at night? I saw it while heading back in and told my son we need to try that one next time if it's still accessible, cut down on the 5-10 minute no-wake zone through the marina. How was the floatel? I was looking around for them as we went through the marina, but didn't see them. I take it that you can drive your boat right up and tie off to the back, that would be pretty nice.

i didnt use the lower launch ramp. they messed up i guess and said it will be closed and under water in a month or so. I guess they built it without thinking about the level ever going up. Ive been launching at the old ramp still. The floatel thing was nice. it gets a little hot in there during the day even with the ac on. Bring a fan if you go, its a definite must! but when the sun goes down its pretty nice. Its a great deal for the price and all the room you get. we had 8-10 people on it for 2 days and not once felt crowded or anything.

...that's excellent news to see the levels rising.. we did a canoe run from Lake Mead Marina to the Hoover Dam on Halloween a few years back and the levels were pretty low... still it was a long paddle and a beautiful site.. lucky the lake was calm that day.

Awesome! October is such a beautiful time to be on mead as well. Less people and the water is still warm enough to enjoy..maybe not so much by Halloween depending on the weather, but in mid Oct. usually.
We just lost an island we have frequented for a few years now we nick-named Gilligan's, due to the water rising but I still say bring it on!

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I Live in LA and would love to go to Mead with a couple other boats. Many years ago I belonged to USPS, San Fernando Valley Squadron. We would launch at Temple Bar, Boat Camp on a beach and take a day trip carefully wending our way thru the ever present sand bars into the Lower Granite Gorge of the Grand Canyon. A marvelous Cruise. We'd stop a a place called "Separation Canyon". That's where some members of the Powell expedition left the main group because they thought they would surely die in that wild river, there is a plaque on the Canyon wall commemorating the event and the fact that they were killed by Indians. Of course the remainder of the expedition was completed successfully.
Right now the Boat's laid up for a month or so, after that I'm game.
