Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I Live in LA and would love to go to Mead with a couple other boats. Many years ago I belonged to USPS, San Fernando Valley Squadron. We would launch at Temple Bar, Boat Camp on a beach and take a day trip carefully wending our way thru the ever present sand bars into the Lower Granite Gorge of the Grand Canyon. A marvelous Cruise. We'd stop a a place called "Separation Canyon". That's where some members of the Powell expedition left the main group because they thought they would surely die in that wild river, there is a plaque on the Canyon wall commemorating the event and the fact that they were killed by Indians. Of course the remainder of the expedition was completed successfully.
Right now the Boat's laid up for a month or so, after that I'm game.

I would love to go there,it seems strange to me that this seperation point is so passed the grand canyon rough water area. And that they were killed by indians i dont think is true either.I have read all about powells adventure and i dont think this is true.At this point they lost some of the boats and lots of gear and these men choose to go for high ground.Indians would have been there for them if they found them, but they did not, they were probally following powell down the rest of the river to see what would happen to them.show me paintings made by the indians of this encounter and it will tel the truth.there out there but not found yet.

Hey John3
That is an awesome trip that I'm wanting to do again as soon as it's possible as well. Right now there are 3 waterfalls I'm told that make it impassible from the lake to get up into the canyon. We'll have to wait probably another 50 or so feet of elevation to be able to make it. A couple of guys launched rafts from Pierce Ferry last year to ride the river down to the lake and one of them died at one of the falls. He wasn't wearing a life jacket and got stuck in the hydraulics going over the biggest of the new falls.

Hey 12V,

How are the commercial rafters getting out? I used to watch them motor past Sandy Point and haul out at South Cove.

Interesting question.

I drove (by car) to Pierce Ferry back in 99 and that was take-out point back then. Though, that was when the lake was up over 1200'.... Funny how time flies, that trip was right after I got married and we spent a weekend in Laughlin. The trip to Pierce Ferry and South Cove was a "short-cut" back to Las Vegas :D

Hey QC

They extended the road at Pearce Ferry all the way down to the water so the rafters can take out there. There isn't any launching allowed at Pearce Ferry, and the guy that drowned put in illegally.

Click to see the story of how what they're calling "Superimposition Rapid" was formed, along with some cool timeline photos."Superimposition Rapid" From what they're stating in the story, we may be able to get past there next year. Very cool

Click HERE then zoom in on the green arrow. It takes you to the new Pearce Ferry road. Follow the river downstream (left) to the rapid. This sat photo is probably a year or more old.

From what I can see by the Google Sat images, there isn't more falls then the Superimposition Rapids/ Falls. I saw some more rapids downstream, but other than that no falls in the images.

that's cool he won by going up river. I could tell by the u tube vid that he wasn't up as far as the rapids though. Not far past the rapids is Pearce Ferry, then the entrance to the Grand Canyon

Those were probably the Iceberg rapids referred to in your link 12V.

85th still ain't bad in that caliber of event. I thought he nailed 1st by the vid title. One of my buddy's @ T-Bar just picked up a nice 21' bass boat the beginning of the season. Very nice. I haven't been out in it but my son has and he was stoked.

costs $1600 to enter as a pro,if you came in after 30th you were broke! 1st place was $50,000 and a new nitro bass boat worth $30,000. Tell your buddy about it he might want to enter next yr or even in october theres a tourny at calville with smaller payouts but cheaper entrys. And for you people who dont have bass boats but big tackle boxes you can enter the won bass tourys as a AAA,its half price and a great experiance, you might end up fishin with a pro,but you will be back seat driver and have no say as where to go!But if you win you will make money and a reputation for youself.

Re: calling all lake mead boaters! nevada

I don't know how many times I've been checked for fishing license and safety check out there but it started seeming like everytime I went. The boat number and name is recorded in a computer I believe on their boat. Once I did feel a little harassed when I was loading my boat on to the trailer I get on my knees on the open bow cushion and reach over and hook the winch than direct my wife to pull forward. Its not that big of boat or reach to do it. Just as I was hooking up I heard a almost screaming voice saying sit down. I looked over to the dock and see two young uniformed feds. I came so close to telling them to f off but I've learned to be more patient these days. I was hooked so I sat and directed my wife to pull up.
