Can deep cell marine batteries get wet?

So, I'm brand new to boating. I just bought my first canoe 3 days ago.

Anyhow, I bought a brand new 12V 40 amp marine battery from Stowaway to power my 40lb trolling motor and it died in about 30 minutes of use. It was sitting in the back of the canoe in about 1 inch of water. My girlfriend says the water probably drained it and that I should get a box for it, but I thought deep cell marine batteries were built for this type of use?

We want the finest marine batteries available to humanity...

...and I want them here and I want them now. :joyous:

OK, I've bought 2 little 40 amp Stowaway deep cell marine batteries for my 40lb trolling motor and I want something more powerful so I can stay out on the water longer. I understand that bigger is better, but won't normal size batteries slow me down? Is there a specific band that is REALLY GOOD or is Stowaway about the best I can get?

Got a link to the type battery you got? If it's only 40A, it's way too small for a trolling motor.

Wet doesn't hurt modern batteries.

I merged both threads together. It't not a matter of your battery getting wet.
One of those little baby batteries might keep a depth sounder running for a while, but not a trolling motor.

I've already learned the hard way. The know-it-all at academy told me it would work. Long story short, I ended up paddling nearly a mile yesterday. AND I'm going to need enough power for my 55lb Prowler that I just ordered from BassPro when it gets here.

Thanks Bond-o, but I was hoping to buy something today from a department store. Are you sure 158lbs won't slow down a canoe?

Canoe's are designed for paddles, if you want to use a big electric trolling motor, then you need a big battery to run it.

Those little pretend batteries are not going to do the job. Deal with it.

or think about a small gas motor, or maybe the 4 stroke propane Lehr Propane Outboard Engines

a wally world one will work fine just get the biggest deep cycle one that fits in the area.

To be honest see if you can get a fully sealed battery because the vented ones are not designed to be rolled upside down and if you sit in spilled acid it will burn your ........

Re: Can deep cell marine batteries get wet?

As a very loose rule of thumb, a trolling motor will draw about One Amp per Pound of Thrust.
Meaning a 55# Motor will drain a 100 Ah battery in a little under 2 hours at Full throttle.
You should expect to get 3-4 hours realistically with partial throttle, and some time drifting.
The 40# motor might buy you 5 hours going a little slower.

The 40# motor will drain that 23Ah Battery in less than a half hour at Full throttle.
Getting a half hour out of it was about right.

The 40 Reserve Capacity MINUTES assumes a 25 AMP Drain.
The 23 Amp-Hour Capacity Assumes a 20 Hour Drain. (1.15A)
The two number are not comparable because of the vastly differing loads used to make the measurements.

This not the battery you want, it is not a deep cycle. "Marine battery" and "deep cycle" aren't the same thing.

Also you don't really need an AGM battery, it will perform no better than a normal battery, and will cost about twice as much. The advantge is that it can be tipped over and not leak, if you like that feature go for it.
