I have a 07 Toyota Tacoma 6 cyl. automatic 2 wheel drive with a towing package. I want to purchase a pontoon boat. Would this truck tow it ok and would I be limited to a certain length boat. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Can my Tacoma pull a pontoon

Towing a pontoon is very different than towing anything else except perhaps a travel trailer. Length and weight of the pontoon is less of an issue than the "shape" of the boat. It is big, square, and towing it is like pulling a huge barn door through the wind so wind resistance is your greatest enemy. If you intend to tow long distances at freeway speeds you will be very unhappy with the performance and fuel economy. If your trips are short, on secondary roads and speeds at 55 MPH or so you should do fine.

I have been looking at Tacoma for pulling my boat, the 2010 prerunner with the v6 can tow 6500 as long as it has the factory tow package. I think it is 4k without

As Silvertip said it's not the weight you're dealing with, it's the wind resistance. I have a 24' 'toon and pull it w/ a '01 chev 1/2 ton w/ 5.3 and automatic. When I'm doing 65 against a headwind it is like dragging a parachute. I don't know if you're gonna tow a 'toon or a reg boat. If it's a reg, disregard all I've said.

I have a 2001 Tacoma v6 and have towed a 17ft fiberglass bass boat and also a 20ft pontoon. The bass boat towed highway speeds way easier but was heavy and harder on the brakes. The pontoon is light but is hard on the tranny due to wind drag.

The Toyota web site doesn't show "prerunner" and the 4-runner with a V6 is rated at 5000 pound towing properly equipped. If you looked at the GVWR that is not the tow rating. GVWR is Gross Vehicle Weight Rating meaning the weight of the vehicle and its load. For that vehicle it is 6100#. Trailer weight does not enter into that number except for trdailer tongue weight which becomes weight added to the vehicle.

Tacoma Prerunner is essentially the same as the 4wd minus the frontdrive. (frame, suspension, and 6lug wheels are same)

I towed a 20' pontoon with a 3l ranger 5 sp 2wd with absolutely zero issues.

My 2007 Tacoma xtra cab 2wd manual pulls a 5,000 lb boat+trailer combo quite easily. I imagine that it would pull any reasonably sized pontoon boat as well. Drag will be a bigger issue than weight but I still doubt it would be a problem under normal conditions.

I think you'd be okay pulling a 'toon with it. I can pull my fiberglass boat with my Mitsubishi Endeavor for short trips without a problem and it's rated below the boat+trailer weight (3,500lbs towing capacity). Normally I use my '98 Ram 1500 which pulls it with ease.
