is it cold in MD? if it is....put the motor outside for the night, bring it in tomorrow, add some heat to the flywheel, and go at it.

High Trim. I use my impact gun on all flywheels. Don't need to lock the flywheel down, the mass is enough. I don't mess around, it is the cleanest simplest method I know and it works!

I agree. I only use an impact on the bigger engines like the 105 ft lb 40's. It works well! Chris, have fun in Florida... 80F down there this week. I guess that means you're gonna miss Ajax?

If there is lock tite , The heating /cooling will break it down, You are doing just fine with it keep up the good work, Again don't pry up to hard around the edges of the flywheel' it is remote but I know of at least one crankshaft bent in this manner.

This is how I do it, Lay motor on the ground find a good spot to pry between flywheel and block. Get a air hammer/chisel use the pointed round bit. loosen flywheel nut but don't remove as stated. pry up on flywheel (not allot of force is needed) give it 3-5 second burst with the tool, it will pop. this is much easier with 2 people. I have yet to find one this method will not get off. look at Harbor freight for(central pneumatic} super duty air hammer, its on sale right now for $13.99

What if you cranked the puller on w/impact wrench (TIGHT), and then do the above^ on the puller bolt while slightly lifting the flywheel?

That baby's gonna pop!

I agree. If impact gun + puller won't do it, then that things is welded on there or something. Great advertisement for Locktite though, if that does prove to be the case :)

Thanks for all the advice/tips, I sure hope this thing is gonna come off. I am gonna try the aceton/trans fluid with a new puller tonight. I will let it soak all week with the puller on tight. Hopefully I will have pictures this weekend or earlier with it off. It would be nice to have this 62 evinrude on the back of my 64 glasspar. Thanks again.

Outlawfox:

Best of luck to you.

What worked for me was persistence. Oiling, tightening the puller nut, tap puller nut with rubber mallet, repeat every few hours. Mine took 2 days of this before it came loose.

(I even used a few swear words towards the end, not sure if that helped or not.)

:)

Thanks man, yea swear words are not helping. Today i broke another bolt, and when it broke it also stripped out half of the threads, so tomorrow i get to retap all the bolt holes to 3/8 so hope fully no more broken bolts. I am happy to see the acetone/trans fluid is seaping in, atleast it looked that way. Well as always i will update more tomorrow.

Sure...why not? It's not as though nitric acid dissolves steel....or that he might want to reuse the crankshaft...

"Here, hold my beer while I put this nitric acid on the crankshaft":facepalm:

Ok, I have thought of another option, I have found a flywheel on Ebay for a good price. Is there a way to cut the flywheel off w/o damaging the crank? I know a sawzall could do it, but things could get messy. I have a buddy who has a welding/fabrication shop and access to almost any type of metal cutting/welding tools (ie plasma cutter).

GULP! Well I guess you could cut it off, but just go slow and be careful. Be a surgeon, not a butcher. I would go the sawzall route rather than the plasma cutter route because of the heat. However, I would worry most about damaging the crankshaft and/or the magneto beneath the flywheel, and who knows what you might find once you get the flywheel off. If it really has been loctited on there, or something, you'll have to figure out some way to clean the mating surface of the crankshaft taper such that the new flywheel will fit properly. I'd be curious to see how the surgery goes, so do take lots of pics if you choose to go that route, however I would try one more time to remove it intact. Maybe you can take it to a mechanic and they can blast it with their industrial impact wrench, or use some sort of ultra-secret, magic, extra-strength flywheel puller that they keep in the back for just such occasions. They make those right? Keep us posted either way. Good luck!

P.S.

Would it be out of the question to consider this one a parts motor and try to find another one? Less than ideal, but perhaps less effort in the long run.

Re: Can not remove flywheel on 62 Evinrude 40hp.

I have access to an industrial impact as well( a 3/4") impact, plus we have the heavy duty air hose, but first we need to tap the holes to a large diameter, cause im breaking the 1/4" grade 8 bolts with my impact and it is only 1/2" drive. Im thinking 3/8" cause it looks pretty beefy. If i was to go cut off route, id use a cut off wheel and go slowly till i got close to the crank, then id have to cut towards the keyway. I have found a crank online as well all for good prices.

Cool. Sounds like a plan. If that impact wrench won't get it off then it's either been welded on there, or you have the greatest commercial for Loctite ever. LOL. Good luck! Keep us posted!

Have you tried puting heat on it? A blowtorch would probably help.

Re: Can not remove flywheel on 62 Evinrude 40hp.

Yes I have done about 10 intervals of heat with a butane tourch, and still nada. I will be heading to my buddies garage in about an hour to work on it some more(gonna tap to 3/8") then use the impact on it. I spoke with him just a few min ago, and its not a 3/4" impact that he has, it is 1". But we will need to bring the motor to his shop. So I am gonna tap tonight, then put the puller on and use my impact, and leave it on if it doesnt pop immediately. Then if it is not off by friday, we will bring it to his shop and use the 1" impact gun, and if it still does not come off, then I am gonna use the cut off wheel and video/take pics to show how I removed a stuck flywheel. Thanks again everyone!!!!

Wow. I just can't imagine why someone would use locktite on a flywheel. Well, I hope things work out and don't hurt the crank.
