Not as bad, but I just overhauled a 1956 30hp Johnson.
The previous owner must have used a whole tube of 3M 847 on it! Every metal to metal contact was sealed. Took me hours to clean everything once dissasembled.
They even covered the points adjusting screw? Silly rabbits.
you don't realize how tuff that 847 is until you try to scrape/dissolve it off...I guess we could contact 3M for a "releasing agent" suggestion. The only thing I've found that halfway works is O'Reily spray carb cleaner and a rag.
Foxie...not long after I joined this forum I recall a guy cutting his flywheel off with a side cutter/grinder, he cut a pie slice out finishing the cut with a cold chiesel. Note that he had another flywheel to put on. This is the most extreme action I recall reading. Best of luck.
Well i got to my buddies house and tapped new threads to M8, and set up the puller. I hit the puller with the impact gun for 5 minutes and then used a pry bar and just as i gave it some pressure it popped free!!!!!!!!! I am soo happy!!!!! I am not sure if there was lock tite, but the flywheel and crank was dirty as hell!!!!!! Well she is off now, and the coils look newer, not sure if they are good but im gonna replace em any ways. Well thanks for all the advice/tips, but i think the acetone/trans fluid did it as it appeard to have soaked in, and it was all under the flywheel. Well here is a pic for your viewing pleasure.
Outlaw, glad you finally got it off. Maybe that ATF and Acetone does work. Off subject. In the pic of your Buddies shop, is that a generator or welder in the back ground ??
Hell, I wouldn't replace those coils. Those things will probably last as long as you will. LOL I would just give it new points and condensors and call it good. Nice lookin old motor. Just like the one I have
Boobie, it is an old welder with a built in generator. He said it was an old brand that was real good, but they dont make any more cause it would be too expensive.
Why not test the coils, they are likely fine, as is the condensors and points. Quick check with a meter will tell. Let us know if you need help with this.
I pulled it cause spark was intermittent on the lower plug. I think points are off, i will look into it later this weekend. Plus i would rather know for certian the electronics are in good order before i took her out on the water(i dont like being stranded).
Glad you finally got that sucker off. Make sure to CLEAN that crank and flywheel shiny clean before re-installing the flywheel. And torque it to 105ft.lbs.
