Some last long weekend this turned out to be.
No# 2 cyl taking in water. Trouble starting engine because of it.
Took it in gaskets replaced. Carbs cleaned and rebuilt
Rectifier replaced
Peehole stream used to be very strong now half as strong at idle and 1/4 throttle At WOT stream weakens and stops after about 45 seconds. Engine gets really hot
Back to idle stream comes back and water super hot for awhile until engine cools
Mechanic thought it could be thermastat sticking so I removed it. Won't be running motor past September.
Is this an impeller thing or not.
I am so frustrated one thing after another. Boat runs
better than ever no since the above work but now this.
Thanks guys

Re: Can someone please help

Water pump would be a good place to start.

Re: Can someone please help

sounds like the impeller is slipping on the drive shaft at higher rpms. i wouldn't run it until it is repaired or it may never run again.

Re: Can someone please help

I think the new head gasket was incorrectly installed, blocking cooling water flow to the head.

Please, Rick:
1. Identify your engine.
2. Give us a clue in the topic title what your question/problem is. We have enough mysteries to deal with already.

peehole water stream week since head gasket replacement

peehole water stream week since head gasket replacement

1983 Johnson 70 hp
peehole water stream weak. And then gone after 45 sec at WOT
All was fine until head gasket replacement.
Had water coming into no# 2 cyl.
What could possibly go wrong with the gasket install.
Doea it not only go on one way.

Thanks

Bad impellor originally, which burnt head gasket, but then head gasket was installed wrong (maybe) but you still havent replaced the impellor have you??? Oh ya engines run much better at proper temp, so when you replace the impellor put a new thermostat in as well. Mike

Re: Can someone please help

My apologies guys
Spoke with mechanic. Was just the exhaust gaskets on the side that were replaced. Water was spraying onto no#2 cyl in around the exhaust area. Wasn't head gasket. Seeing as the peehole spout is at the bottom of this plate on that side.
can anyone think of what could possibly cause blockage
to the peehole at higher rpms. Or is this just a coincidence that the impeller decided to take a walk at this time.
I thought the impeller was keyed. Either works or doesn't
was my understanding. I will put another thermostat in as well.

Thanks guys

it is keyed, but that doesn't mean that the fingers are in good shape, they could be cracked or broken off, that happened to me once, only once

Re: Can someone please help

Well I took it back to `the mechanic that did the work and sure enough he came back with "it's your impeller".
And not just the impeller but the entire assembly housing plates impeller etc. All parts related to water pump area. Brand new.
get it back after paying 165.00 dollars.
Put it back in the water and guess what. Same flippin problem. Wot 45 seconds peehole weakens and then ceases.
Can someone please verify that the problem being encoutered is directly related to the job performed by the mechanic that removed the exhaust side of my engine to replace failed gaskets. I have had my engine for 3 years and I have never had water circulation issues
This problem started when I got it back the first time after the gasket job.
It has to be related.

Can anyone think of what else it might be.

Thanks

Re: Can someone please help

What does your mechanic say about the problem??If I had to guess,I'd say there is a possibility that some crud was dislogded or excessive gasket sealer during the gasket replacement and is causing a restriction that migrates to the tell tale fitting.Did you have a solid stream flow at higher rpms before someone trouble shot water in the cylinder? Is your difficult starting problem resolved? Did your mechanic show you any evidence of water intrusion into cylinder?

Re: Can someone please help

you bet always strong prior to work done
just to clarify I was told water was spraying onto the top of piston No#2. It sounds like you hit the problem right on the nose. That has to be the cause
Can I remove the tell tale fitting? Maybe whatever is there will dislodge and come out

Re: Can someone please help

That's what I would do.Remove the fitting and run the engine on the hose.Try to rig up a water deflector so you don't spray all over the plug leads or other wiring.

Re: Can someone please help

so this explains why the water is so hot when it starts to recirculate back down at idle its being trapped in the exhaust area.

Re: Can someone please help

Should just unthread from on or near the upper exhaust cover area.Remove the hose first and see if there is any crud visible.Put some pentetrating oil around the threads before breaking loose if it appears oxidized. It's pipe thread ,so after cleaning the threads before reinstall, apply a light dose of thread sealer.PST loctite works good.If this mechanic didn't replace the thermostat assy. ,I highly recommend installing a new one.T/stat housing cover is just above the top cylinder.

what do you think my chances are of clearing this blockage using this method

Re: Can someone please help

Well if there is indeed crud that has migrated to the fitting area,I'd say real good.Consider also that if the water exiting is hot,as in bove 163 degrees your T/stat needs replacing. This tell tale hose not only provides an indication of waterflow but allows air to esacpe at a high point in the cooling system which aids in keeping the water jackets flooded out.A restriction entering the tell/tale fitting could concievably cause a cooling issue as well.

Re: Can someone please help

Probably was the normal location for that year engine.Later models however were relocated to the top area of the cover for the reasons mentioned above. Some careful drilling, tapping ,and pipe plugging of original hose location, can upgrade yours as well.It wouldn't be a first.Did you also replace or service the relief valve feature within the T/stat assy and insure that the proper spring was installed and valve was free to travel? This feature allows for full flow at higher rpms.
