Good luck Canada! You are gonna need it!
No offence, but most folks who are posting here are as ignorant of our electoral system (and country)
. That would be the republicans that you are referring to....They preach that you have a right to your opinion, (as long as it is the same as theirs), & they don't have to pay for it!
As I stated before, Canada does not need to waste money on military.....Uncle Sam will take care of any war mongering issues that might arise.....Just leave that to Dubya.....He will tell you what to do when it is time.....The U.S. is the only place that Canada needs to fear from attack.....If you armed every man, woman & child, it still wouldn't be enough to stop us....I think that Canadians would be smarter to spend their money elsewhere.....BTW, change is good! We will have our own house cleaning this November!
I don't think that alot of U.S. people get just how many Canadians are of French descent & how much power they wield.....That could be why Canada has two official languages  .....Ours is soon to be Spanish, (with a little help from Dubya)......JK

Actually, it's quite the opposite.
True, and, in fact, they fight to leave this country for 30 years but federal governement spend hundreds of millions (Ads scam) to try to keep them in...

Like I said Haut, that is the core of their problems. Why anyone would want to emulate France is beyond me but it is undoubtedly in the Genes.

Also if we don't get our act in order we will start seeing road signs in Spanish and worse. I see little benefit of emulating any of the Romance cultures.(tacos and enchiladas excluded) :p

Language is the primary link to any culture. IMHO that is where the division lies.

Dollup, I guess we are to take this as your dissappointment that the Canadian Style 'cradle to grave' entitlement, anti-firearm, pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, anti-military mentality is in some jeopardy?

Hmmmm. It seems to me that Canada and the USA share more than the language and culture we both share with the UK and other former British colonies.

Any party or philosophy that has too much power for too long tends to over-apply its philosophy to a radical extent. Then the opposing party takes over and spends a few years trying to correct the excesses of the first party before beginning their own excesses.

Tick. . . tick. . .tick. The pendelum swings.

Re: Canada punts Liberals

That's what I have been saying, JB.

This is not a fundamental shift in political philosophy, but rather a bit of a course correction, and I would not look for radical changes.

Frankly, Canada's economy has been doing well under the Liberals--The dollar is at near all-time highs vs the US dollar, and Canadian debt levels are low.

The conservatives toned down their rhetoric a bunch...

Sure they need tougher sentences on criminals, they need to tweak the health care system, etc. ,but I would not look for wholesale changes. Harper in his campaign promised not to send Cdn. troops to Iraq, for example.

The best quote from Harper I have seen is the following:

"Canadians can disagree, but it takes a lot to get Canadians to intensely hate something or hate somebody. And it usually involves hockey."

Re: Canada punts Liberals

It is a system of balances. One party swings to far
left and they get cut off. The next party swings to
far right. And the pendulum swings. Exactly.

This Country is more united today than it was
yesterday. The possibilities that a fresh start
can bring can only serve to make us better.
Only time will tell. The new powers that be will
bring us better relations and prove that we have
more in common that we were led to believe by our
previous administration. Even Quebec through the
electoral process has shown that they are not
satisfied with the separatist party. And have turned
their back on the Liberal powers which they have
endorsed for decades.
Ontario it seems would much rather stick with the
devil they know than give up their major source
of power the Liberals.
But the tide is turning, Alberta and B.C. have
become Large financial centers and are stealing
the thunder from Ontario and becoming a political
power in Canada.
Today the Liberal ship is sinking as their leader
has resigned the party leadership.
They are like a ship without a rudder. Trying to
be all things to everyone and no real platform to
stand on.
The Liberals will rebuild. And Stephen Harper will
take this great Country Forward and we will all
be better for it.

Re: Canada punts Liberals

No, of course we won't invade Canada.....My point is that some people seem worried about Canada's military....I'm saying that no one will attack Canada, with us at their door...I'm saying that there is no real security threat and that they could better spend their money on other things.....I don't think that there has been a battle fought on Canadian soil since our revoloution.....I must admit that I do not know what state of affairs the Canadian military is in, but I would find it hard to believe that it is a state of collapse.....JK
