recently was pulling my daughters at low speeds say 20 mph nose in air a little lots of circles and turns after about an hour of pulling i had circled to idle back to her then when i put it in reverse to slow boat it died and never would crank it would just spin over so i checked for firing and it was firing but it smelled like gas so i waited it out say about 15 min then tried it and would just spin over so i pushed throttle all the way down and then back it back up to 1/4 throttle and it hit a couple of time but wouldnt start so i got towed to dock and waited for my wife to bring the truck when she got there i tried it after hour and a half nothing still until i went to full throttle and then back down to 1/4 throttle then it hit i left throttle there and it started after 10 seconds of sputtering it cranked i then throttled it to half way and it was smoking and sputttering but i could hear it hissing like flooding then died could this be carb or coil or what i just wanna know where to start when i go back to work on it cause dont wanna be towed again thanks gentlemen

You have a flooded condition, pumping the thottle makes it worse. To start a flooded engine, you move the thottle to the full throttle and crank the engine to start. Lot more air and no more fuel.

The dying could be because it needs a tuneup, or some carb repair/adjustment. Is the choke closed after it dies? It shouldn't be.

There should be a number on the outside of the airhorn on a Holley. You can look up the parts kit that way. Most gaskets and hard items in the kit will be useable as is in either Auto or Marine carbs. One exception is the powervalve. If the kit is supposed to cover that number you have then it should be Marine specific and the power valve should be a 3.5 or 4.5. An auto kit for the same type of carb will have a 6.5 or higher. But you can get the power valves separately if all you can find is an Auto kit.

Starting with that carb# on the airhorn and going to a Napa or other good parts house should get you pretty far down the road.

I am familiar enough with certain Holley 4bbl types that I know what to go get off the performance "wall" at a speed shop or good auto parts store, or even online/ebay etc. So if some of what I say is not detailed enough I apologize

auto zone, napa, summit racing, your local engine machine shop etc. all carry holley parts

power valve is about $7.

with the nose in the air for a long time, could simply have just over-powered the carb float.

There are some numbers stamped on the power valve. Be sure to use this number when you get your new one.
The numbers represent the inches of vacuum required to operate it.

Those valves would work fine. Your float maybe set to high. Its easy enough to check the level.

I would call around to your local auto parts stores and make sure they have a decent selection first. The most common size I see is 6.5. This should be what yours is. I think this is what the kits come with. But dont be surprised if yours is something different.

Re: carb kit ??? maclin or don please

A 6.5 is too high for typical Marine carb loads. A 3.5 or 4.5 is what it will need.

There are some different thread styles too, I would not order blind but take the carb apart first and see what is in it.

Having typed all that in, the ones you found on eBay appear to be the style of threads I would expect to be in your carb.

Make sure the threads are the same length and diameter and the valve itself is the same diameter and "shape". I would not buy one until I had the one that is from the carb you have now in my hand.
