Finally got around to my "winter project" of cleaning the carbs on my 1971 Merc 800. Better late than never :) The carbs are the WMK-2-1 side bowl type.

Got everything taken apart, thoroughly cleaned and now mostly reassembled. Now at a point where I have a couple question I'm hoping can be answered here.

All of the brass plugs had a red threadlock/sealant on them that worked VERY well. My manual says to use Gasketcinch when reinstalling, but when I call around, no one knows what I'm talking about. Any suggestions ?

Secondly, I removed the welch plugs but not sure of the proper way to reinstall them. The existing ones were mangled and covered in some kind of epoxy or glue so I can't use that as a guide on how to reinstall them :D. Do they install dome out or dome in ? Again, my manual says to seal the outer edge with Gasketcinch. So the same question, what do I use in place of Gasketcinch ?

Thanks much.

Ok I don't know what Gasketcinch is either, may not be any good since its not around any more:rolleyes:. As for the welch plugs, dome out, pushed in, I use a socket of the right outer dia, to "tap" them in with. I use clear nail polish for a sealent ring around them. As for the brass plugs, I don't know, but I suspect a "loctite" number *** will be put forth.

That was my hunch about the dome orientation, but wanted to be certain. Will gas not attack the nail polish? What color do you recommend ? :D

Anyone rebuild the older carbs who might be familiar with what sealants to use?

I like red :)
As to the longevity of the nail polish, I've used it for years, and never had an issue. In fact I think I started using it when I rebuilt a johnnyrude carb, and that was in the instructions in the carb kit.......yes I know....pffffft reading the instructions:eek:
