I used this stuff from quicksilver that is supposed to clean out the carbon build up. Well after following the directions on the can I noticed that when spraying it into the upper carb it would not choke the engine down as it would when spraying into the bottom carb. Is this a firing/ignition problem or a carb problem?
Thanks
Joe

I am personally unfamiliar with that product, but in general, you may have issues with your carb. What is the condition of the plugs? Is the motor running poorly or giving you any issues?

To test the ignition/spark use an inductive timing light or an inline spark tester with the gap set to 7/16 of an inch. The spark should jump the gap with a bright blue ZAP!!

Seafoam is a tried and true product to use during the decarb procedure. Check the FAQ for instructions.

the quicksilver product is very similar. i would say that you did not have spark on the top cylinder.

It runs out fine, it idles fine for a while. Then it gets to where when it is idling its sort of like it stops running for a split second and kind of like a cough. Had a new power pack put on recently(6 months)

Spark was pretty 1/2" or better on both cylinders, so sounds like I will be running seafoam tommorrow

i think you are running lean on one carb, probably the top. low speed jet need to be cleaned out. you can get them out without removing the carbs. i take a couple of strands of wire out of an extention cord. and clean out the jets. then blow them out. you need special tool 317002 to get them out. or make one.

Joe: my mechanic check to see if both carbs are operating by shooting something like that in it while running. If the engine reacts each time the carb is working, if it doesn't react that carberator is boogered and I get a rebuild. Had two now, the carbs on the Evenrude 50's have a propensity to plug up. I spoke with two other guys there with the same repeating problem.

Had two now, the carbs on the Evenrude 50's have a propensity to plug up especially when they sit for awhile. I spoke with two other guys there with the same repeating problem. It looked like you can do it yourself, I may the next time. He had to make a gasket himself, though. That didn't look hard either.

might need new spark plugs. . . That's what it kinda sounds like to me... Does it seem to run better after it warms up?
