I have a Cat 3412E 1300.
the engine overheated and the alarm sounded
i switched off the engine and waited for it to cool and checked the impeller and in wont spin when cranking the engine.
i removed the impeller and cranked the engine and the shaft spun??
i put a new impeller on and cranked and no action??
the teeth for the shaft and the impeller are both good so i am thinking the shaft will spin but not under extra load with (the imperller
i removed the impeller again and took some vice grips and put them on the shaft and i was able to spin the shaft freely in clockwise or counter clockwise directions this cant be right can it?? this would mean i am turning all the gears inside the engine.
any help would be appreciated
cheers

Re: cat impeller shaft problem

It sounds like the bolt that holds the drive gear on has come loose and is allowing the shaft to spin inside the gear, remove the pump and inspect the shaft and gear they will probably be scored up and won't hold if the bolt is just tightened back up, you can buy a reman water pump from a local Cat dealer.

Thanks for your advice you were wright i removed the pump and the bolt was loose bur it wasnt scored too bad so i took the sprocket and everything apart and thoroughly
cleaned everywhere with acetone even down the thread hole and then put the bolt back on and cranked it really tight then reassembled everything and the pump worked fine and has been good for the last few days/week of solid use. Im planing on getting a new shaft at the end of the season so i didnt put locktight on the bolt incase i cant get back off when i go to do so. im hoping it will last the season.
thanks again

Mick I am glad that your pump is back working now. When you order your parts check on the price of a complete reman pump sometimes you can get a reman part with a warranty cheaper than buying the individual parts.
