Re: charging system

Put a voltmeter across the battery terminals with the engine running ... if you have a working charging system, you'll read ~ 13.5 to 14.4 vdc, otherwise ~12.6 vdc. My guess is you have a charging system.

Re: charging system

It should.

Attach a digital voltmeter to the battery.

Before starting it should be around 12.5v then as the RPMs increase it should, rise to 13.8 or more, after prolonged use.

This, if opperable is just enough "juice" to keep the battery charged enough for starting and maybe running a light or small standby electronics. Like your VHF or fishfinder, but not enough to recharge the trolling battery or run a microwave.

Re: charging system

I have a similar problem with my 1990 3cyl. 90hp merc. I don't think the battery is charging and the tach does not work. If the regulator is gone where do I find it???

Re: charging system

back to my original question the motor does not have a external altenator or generator. just wondering if it has any other type of charging system and where is it. this is a 1979 inline 6 115hp it does not need a battery to run other than starting it for the electric starter

Re: charging system

AC stator is under the flywheel. This hooks to a full-wave bridge rectifier. They all had it.

-W

Re: charging system

is the bridge rectifier under the flywheel or on the side of the motor? With this kind of a system wouldn't be like a trickle charger?
