so soon i will hook up muffs to my fatty and check to make sure my waterpump repairs were succesful. since there is no tell tale, how do i make sure its pumping water? i see a hole about 3/8 in in diameter in the lower unit, its slightly above the impeller and i can see the drive shaft through it, is this where i can measure the water temperature?

The water temperature is best measured at the spitter. The spitter is on the midsection, just below the powerhead in the back. Stick a meat thermometer up it and see that it registers about 140 degrees after the motor warms up. Did you check the thermostat?

Be careful using the flush muffs on that motor. The standard ones won't fit too well. I used to put the muff over the reverse water inlet and duct tape the water intake above and behind the prop. A barrel of water is much better for your test. Also, put your hand on the heads to see if they overheat. if the plugs turn green, it is a sure sign of overheating.

also this spitter, is it directly in the back of the engine? about a one inch in diameter hole that one might mistake as an exaust outlet?

It is an exhaust relief, AND cooling water tell-tale. It should blow water out there anytime the motor is running. It will be a little bit when the thermostat is closed and considerably more when it is open. Note: There is no special time when it is open--it is constantly opening and closing as needed to maintain the proper temperature. On a boat in the water, it will be closed most of the time when running at idle.

Glad you gave up on the muffs. You can't test a water pump by running on muffs nohow. The hose pressure force feeds it.

ya i figured that would be the case, so i should be able to touch the heads when its warmed up if its cooling properly?

I would think so
Tashasdaddy always reccomends to go to the dealer and get what they call melt sticks, they melt at certain temps that way you can tell what temp you are at.

Water and spit boils at 212 degrees at sea level---way over the 140 that the thermostat opens.
