Computer trouble

Ugh. Been beating on the machine for 36 hours now.

My computer is an IBM ThinkCenter 2.3gHz with 512MB of RAM and a 1/2 empty 40GB hard drive. I run Windows 2000. I've had the computer for over 3 years now and it works great for my purposes.

Woke up yesterday morning to find that Windows had auto-updated overnight. I've never had any problems with Windows updates. However, yesterday morning I realized that the hard drive was constantly running, slowing the CPU down significantly.

I uninstalled the auto-update hotfix and then ran all my spyware and virus software. Found a few non-threatening things and one malicious trojan. All were cleaned and cleared. The hard drive was quiet. The machine ran great once again. However, it took HOURS to get it all done and it was late last night by the time I was done. Surfed the 'net a little and went to bed.

Got up this morning to find that I'd forgotten to turn off auto-update and that new hotfix file was on there again. Ugh. Soooo... I uninstalled it once more, then ran the spyware and virus programs again. This time at an even deeper level. Took about twelve hours. All clean again.

But the hard drive is STILL running continuously.

What am I missing? Please, no suggestions to switch to Linux, etc.

Thanks!

Re: Computer trouble

Assuming you truly did get it clean... The last IBM I had, had software from the factory that made images as you used the machine (for a lack of a better way to explain it). You can see when starting if active. I forget what they called it.
Could be your Performance Settings in My Computer. Could be your AV software doing it's thing. Could be something else running...how much crap is in the tray and startup?

Re: Computer trouble

Get into your task manager and see whats running......off click by the bottom taskbar will bring it up.......you might want to burn your backup file to disc as micro just dumps it on you

Re: Computer trouble

inetinfo.exe is running and hogging up 150-180 Meg of RAM. CPU usage varying from 80-100%.

I found two versions of inetinfo.exe on my machine in two locations.

C:\WINNT\ServicePackFiles\i386

C:\WINNT\system32\inetsrv

Which one is the "true" file?

Thanks!

First off, add more RAM- at least another 512k. I'm guessing that the computer is caching to the hard drive because of a lack of available memory. If the computer is clean from viruses and adware, you probably need more memory. Every program now is a memory hog, and it's only going to get worse. Resident antivirus programs take at least 1/4 of your total memory right off the bat, and the operating system is surely taking the rest.

All my machines have at least 2gb of memory. My main desktop has 4gb.

Go to crucial . com or tigerdirect and order another stick...you won't be sorry.

They both are, one is a backup.

Inetinfo.exe is part of the IIS Admin program. It is a debugger for IIS, in essense. Go to add/remove programs and select 'add/remove windows components' (or similar, it has been a long time since 2000) and remove FTP server and anything related to IIS (Internet information services).

Doing that will remove that program from running, as it is completely unneeded unless you run your own website from your desktop, which is unlikely, certainly with Win2000.

Well, guess I have to accept the good with the bad. I did remove the FTP server and related files and that cleared the problem.

Sadly, when I ran add/remove Windows components the first time, I checkmarked only the inetinfo box and everything else was removed EXCEPT that file. So I had to run add/remove again to rid myself of inetinfo.exe. It worked.

However, my Outlook Express is now gone. My primary mail program.

Just now, when trying to reinstall Outlook Express I selected ONLY the Outlook Express box to reinstall, but the configuration manager started up with "configuring iinetservices", so I canceled out.

I have a hot lunch date pending, so don't have time to mess with this right now.

What's the best way for me to get Outlook Express reinstalled?

Thanks again!

Are you hosting a web site? Inetinfo.exe goes with IIS, which is Microsoft's web hosting application. It comes with windows XP professional...

If you are not (and do not plan to) HOSTING a web site then you should probably go into your control panel, add or remove programs, add/remove windows components, and uninstall both the IIS and FTP stuff.

Then, scan for rootkits/malware/etc.

Re: Computer trouble

An option if you choose to accept it (And don't absolutely need Outook Express), is to use Mozilla Thunderbird. It is a great E-mail program. There a whole lot of extensions and customizations you can get for it. It is essentially, the Firefox E-mail program.
If I didn't have to have Outlook '07 for work, I would use it still.
From what I remember, the memory usage on it is less than Outlook Express as well, in both RAM and Hard Disk space.

Okay, my lunch date got changed to a dinner date and I now have a few hours to kill.

How do I reinstall Outlook Express without activating inetinfo.exe again? LOL
