Ugh. Been beating on the machine for 36 hours now.
My computer is an IBM ThinkCenter 2.3gHz with 512MB of RAM and a 1/2 empty 40GB hard drive. I run Windows 2000. I've had the computer for over 3 years now and it works great for my purposes.
Woke up yesterday morning to find that Windows had auto-updated overnight. I've never had any problems with Windows updates. However, yesterday morning I realized that the hard drive was constantly running, slowing the CPU down significantly.
I uninstalled the auto-update hotfix and then ran all my spyware and virus software. Found a few non-threatening things and one malicious trojan. All were cleaned and cleared. The hard drive was quiet. The machine ran great once again. However, it took HOURS to get it all done and it was late last night by the time I was done. Surfed the 'net a little and went to bed.
Got up this morning to find that I'd forgotten to turn off auto-update and that new hotfix file was on there again. Ugh. Soooo... I uninstalled it once more, then ran the spyware and virus programs again. This time at an even deeper level. Took about twelve hours. All clean again.
But the hard drive is STILL running continuously.
What am I missing? Please, no suggestions to switch to Linux, etc.
Thanks!
