Re: Concealed Carry Choice

There are over 20,000 people in Mobile County, AL who have concealed carry permits, all of them responsible, law-abiding citizens. There are certain parts of the city where crime is practically non-existant. Other parts are close to being a jungle. Guess what part of town the people who can qualify for a permit live in? Does that tell you anything? Also, you would be surprised how much our new residents from other parts improve their manners when they find out how many people are licensed to carry. No one wants to actually use their gun, but it's there if you need it to protect your family from the animals of the world. They don't make appointments to meet you at your home, you know.

Re: Concealed Carry Choice

Plywoody, I spose it might help to look at it this way: I have health insurance in case I'm ill. I'd like to stay healthy, though. Car insurance in case I'm in a wreck. Rather not have an accident, if possible. Life insurance in case something happens to me, though I'm in no hurry to pass on. Carry just in case some nut decides myself or loved one is his next victim. Odds are 99.99999% I'll never need a weapon. But I'm still concerned about the .00001% chance I might. Being confronted by an armed attacker is such a remote possibility, it's almost laughable. But if it happens, you'd much rather have a .45 than a cell phone. I respect your decision to not carry as long as my right to carry is as well. Hope everyone stays safe regardless.

Just curious... Do you have to conceal your weapon in Texas?. I understand you can wear it out in the open. Just wondering if I have that correct. :)

S&W 9mm, in the vehicle.
NAA22LR in my pocket (shirt, pants, shorts, coat)almost always.

That's alright plywoody. You don't have to carry any tools if you don't want to.

I hardly ever have the need to use the tool kit or first aid kit in my car either. But it's nice to know they're there.
I just don't want to be the fool that forgot to bring a screw driver when someone, or thing, is loosing one.

9mm KelTec P-11. Small enough to carry in a pocket. Light weight and 11 rounds (one in the pipe). Heavy double action trigger pull. Great pocket pistol.

While I despise the idea of having to use a gun against another person I spent a lot of years as a cop and I can tell you that "Protect & Serve" is a myth. They're going to investigate the crime and find out who killed you but it's really up to you to protect yourself and your family.

Snailman...

Is it true that most cops DON'T like the idea of a civilian packing heat?

I've heard both sides of this argument. Just curious what you think.

The few officers I've talked to around my area are about 50/50. Some believe it's a good idea, and some don't.

???

H.

Bassy- No, a pistol must be concealed if you have a CCP. A long gun (rifle) or shotgun may be displayed. If you do not have a CCP and you are carrying a pistol it must be in plain sight.

Homerr- As a peace officer myself I am thankful for the CCP. It does make me a little nervous however 99.99% of people with a CCP are good citizens. I'll take those odds.

KB- Thanks for letting me know. It would be nice to have that here in California.

Re: Concealed Carry Choice

Have had my carry permit for 12 years now. I can count on one hand the amount of times I carried. I think the last thing I would ever want to do is kill another man. I have been in some tight spots over the years and I am glad I did not have a weapon with me,, one bad judgment and its the greybar hotel for a few years. Once you pull that trigger there is no turning back. Even if someone was robbing my house I would let them take everything I had before I would drop the hammer on them. Material things are not worth taking a life. But try to do harm to my family and you might find your kneecaps blown off. I have been all over this country on two wheels in some really seedy places and have yet needed my weapon. Don't get me wrong I am pro gun I have a fair collection myself. Its just not my cup of tea to carry.

Bassy- I want to clarify a little bit so know one gets the wrong idea. If you are not CCP then you have to meet certain restrictions on carrying the pistol. It something like 3 county lines and intent on spending the night. Everyone (adult) but felon can carry the shotgun in plain sight anytime.

To add to soulwinner: I would rather be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Bassy, you do have that in California. It's up to the Sheriff in your county (Placer?), if you will be issued a CCW.

A CCW means the firearm must be concealed.
No CCW, then in plain sight, but NOT available loaded in a vehicle.
Rifles, shotguns plain sight, NOT loaded in a vehicle.

Flathead, I feel exactly the same as you do,
though I carry most always.

The number one reason I carry is because it's a right I cherish. It also keeps me at my best behaviour and control of myself at all times.

The next reason, is I'm involved with equine/cattle events a lot. There is nothing more sad, urgent and horrible then a severly injured horse. The sounds and situation are intense.

No less important then the first two reasons is personal and public safety.

I guess, considering my signature below, it's time for me to add my .02.

HK USP Compact .45. w/ Corbon 45 acp +P 165 gr JHP

http://www.moreammo.com/uspistols.html

I have a permit but seldom carry it. My position is that it is the natural right of every law abiding citizen to not only own one but to be able to carry it if he/she deems it necessary. I think that contrary to most opinions, political opposition to guns is not a matter of safety but one of relieving the individual of as much power as can possibly be done. Guns are but the tip of the iceberg in that quest. If history is any example there is no shortage of people who want to have control over others. Just look at the clever ways some of our politicians frame different things like national healthcare and "doing it for the children" Does America really think that these politicians give one whit about your health or about your children's well being. Does America really thinkthat the current attack on SUV's has anything to do with the environment? Does America think the the current attack on Christianity has anything whatsoever to do with diversity and fairness? Etc. Etc.

No! It has everything to do with making the individual powerless and subservient to their eventual will. America is and has been unique in the history of the world and your right to own and carry has been but a symbol of that freedom. If we don't demand it and don't excercise it, we WILL lose it. It's a slow slide and they are very patient.

I won't get into a guns arguement... might get shot :D Seriously though, with what I seen in the late 60's, up close and personal, I'll never take another human life unless it's to save my own, and maybe not even then.

I own a Mossberg 12 ga that gets me ducks and pheasant though.

Snailman, I pack the same.....KelTec P11. I use the Fiochi's. With my current load, I am supposed to get about 83% one shot stopping power. I love having those 11 rounds in case of emergency though.

Obviously, I hope I never have to use it, but I refuse to let my family, or myself, become a statistic.

Re: Concealed Carry Choice

I have to agree with so many here. I do have the permit, and I do carry on occasion because of a felt need. However, most often it is out of hunting convenience. I would hate to ever take a human life, and would have to think twice before unholstering it for that. I would hope that the apparent threat of the .44mag would do the trick. If not, then we would have to determine what was best for my health, and the health of those around me.

However, I am a responsible citizen, and don't take my rights from me. My wife also wants to learn to shot and then get her permit. I will be most happy to help her in that endeavour.
